Wonderful story
I was looking for stories to add depth to my multicultural classroom library. Saltypie is a wonderful addition. Written from the viewpoint of a young American Indian boy, the story is filled with love and appreciation for what his grandmother has endured and for all the love and support she has given to others. To be honest, I cried - it is that beautiful.I have recommended this book to colleagues and friends - it is a must-have addition to any library.

A beautiful story that fills in the gaps using proper segways ...
Learned several new things today all having to do with the Choctaw way.A beautiful story that fills in the gaps using proper segways to tell time through out this story of what to say when things don't make sense. 'saltypie'.Written by Tim Tingle, illustrated by Karen Clarkson and published by Cinco Puntos Press.#PB #NF #heritage #Choctaw

Listen and Learn
Another wonderful book for children (and adults, too) comes from distinguished author and internationally-recognized Choctaw storyteller, Tim Tingle. In Saltypie:A Choctaw Journey from Darkness into Light, Tim reflects the exceptionally close relationships existing in his family, generation after generation, and the mutual respect and understanding amongst his relatives. In Tim's family, the closeness particularly includes his grandmother, "Mawmaw". Family photos and details about some of the relatives will bring a smile to your face!Choctaw artist, Karen Clarkson, has immaculately portrayed Mawmaw at different stages in her life. Karen maintains, with her artistry, a remarkable resemblance throughout Mawmaw's years. In his ideal way of telling a story, Tim perfectly weaves the connecting threads and remarkable endurance throughout the family's generations. The Nations have suffered indescribable assaults against their heritage, culture, traditions, languages, spiritual beliefs, and against unalienable rights endowed by their Creator. In the author's personal comments, he considers the proposition, "How much can we tell them?", offering invaluable advice for teachers...work on refining students' knowledge about North America's indigenous people. Students and adults need to be redirected away from long suffered stereotypes consigned to The Nations by film and fiction book industries, and by prejudices of non-indigenous ethnic groups.Saltypie:A Choctaw Journey from Darkness into Light is a perfect way to begin this much-needed attitude adjustment. Plus, it is a perfectly wonderful story for children and adults of all ages. What an encouraging thought that this loving, history-based story might become a treasured building block in classrooms' reading curricula and homes across the country. The process of listening and learning is within each of us -- young and old..
