A fun and ingenious story generally well told, but with a disappointing number of grammatical and word-use/spelling mistakes
For avid Minecraft players in their teen and/or tween years, this ingenious Minecraft adventure novel by Mark Cheverton is a dream come true. Having read it with my 11-year old son, I can attest to the fact that it was an engaging and fun read, and it also conveyed a positive underlying message.I admire the author's inventiveness for using Minecraft as a setting for an adventure novel--real kudos there. I also think the overall plot and the characters were interesting, and that the story was generally well told. What disappointed me was the quality of the writing in a number of places. There were numerous instances of incomplete sentences, misspellings, words used incorrectly, and grammatical mistakes. As a parent, those things bothered me A LOT. I spend a lot of time and energy trying to teach my son good writing habits, and it doesn't help to reinforce those habits when he sees those kinds of egregious mistakes in a book he is reading. The only other criticism I have of the story is something that my son, an avid Minecraft player, pointed out--namely, there were several instances of the main character doing things in the game that a serious player might consider pretty 'dumb' (in terms of Minecraft expertise), and there were also some inconsistencies with the way in which the game actually works. But those things were certainly forgivable and not a major hindrance to our enjoyment of the story. We look forward to the next installment in the series and congratulate Mr. Cheverton on a brilliant idea and on a story well told.

Challenged my 8 year old and taught online courtesies
My 8-year old finished this in 5 days. He said it deserved 5 stars. The ending left you hanging a bit. I guess that leaves the option of a sequel open. He didn't notice the typos/edit errors, I noticed one confusing sentence in the first 6 pages or so that I read to him to prove the reading was not too challenging for him. I don't need literary perfection, just something that holds his interest and challenges him a little; it's getting harder to find books he'll really dig into when they don't have pictures or comics anymore, but this one worked. He said none of it scared him, I guess because he has so much experience with the game itself. Another one of the Minecraft novels also caught my eye, but in checking out the writing, the main character was criticizing his parents a lot - trying to stay away from that theme which is so prevalent in some of the kids books these days. Keeping kids positive about school, teachers, parents and family members is hard enough without the influence of books.

great story, but read with caution
i pre-read the book before giving to the 11-12year old boys in the family, and was initially botheted by the graphic minecraft violence. words such as "pigs cried and squealed in agony and pain" and "i slashed through its skin" were repeated through the first few chapters. i actually passed through many of those pages and was pleasantly surprised to find an emotionally deep and complex story carrying valuable life lessons that the main character, a true bully, and the reader can learn from and ponder. i enjoyed discussing the book with the kids aftwr they read it so to ensure they grasped the meaning of the story, and to check on how they processed the graphic violence (they definately thought i was being too sensitive) but i would only recommend this to age 11 and over, and i suggest you discuss the story as well.

Best Minecraft series out there!!
My 7 year old son and I have purchased tons of Minecraft books. He has enjoyed most of them, but as a parent this is by far the best Minecraft series I have found yet. It is written with intelligence and teaches good morals in a way that is fun for Minecraft fans. My son has learned several words that I didn't even know. (i.e. cacophony, and copse). This is an amazing series. I find myself excited to read a chapter with him at bedtime. We are now on the last one in the Gameknight999 series and then we will be starting Mark Cheverton's next series. If you child likes Minecraft, I highly recommend these books!

I read this book all the way through it took me about a week and its so epic It kept me hooked for hours :DThis deserves 5 stars cos it's just higher than your average bookIt's not too long even though it's missing the funniess of a book but that's not enough to knock off a starCan't wait for the 2014 and 2015 books next in the series ^_^

Oh. My. God.
This is such an epic book, it really captivated me to the point of not being able to put it down! You don't know what's coming next so every little twist and turn is extremely exciting, so much that it grasps you like vines on a Minecraft tree (that means a lot). This is definitely the right book to spend your money on if you want a book full of Minecraft, adventure and excitement. Plus it's such good value too!
