Awesome little router
Mikrotik is a professional grade router at a sub-consumer-grade price. You are getting hardware that does the same thing as professional grade routers costing thousands of dollars. As such, it is not trivial to configure. However, a network engineer or someone with extensive networking experience will have no trouble getting this running to do cool things like VLAN's, VPN tunnel terminations, active routing, MPLS, source and destination NAT, custom firewall rules, and way more than you would ever need for your home. I love that I can VPN into the router from my laptop or smartphone and access network devices as if I was home on the wifi.Out of the box, this comes configured for home use. Connect port 1 to your cable modem, connect ports 2 through 5 to your computers, and everyone can get online. It has DHCP and NAT enabled, so it will work out of the box, no problems. But it can do so much more than that. This would be perfect for a small or medium sized office, and has all the capabilities to connect multiple office sites together to share resources over a public link.Pros:+ Very powerful professional grade router+ GIGABIT!!!!!!!+ Small form factor+ High value (performace to dollar amount ratio)+ Stable, reliable OSCons:- Not trivial to set up, although everything you need to know is in an online wiki page.- There is absolutely no documentation included in the box with the router.- No built-in wireless; you'll need an external AP or different model number Mikrotik for that.

Feature rich, reliable, but not perfect
This router has many advanced features for a good price.Example: I have a Synology NAS that backs up 5 terabytes of data to Amazon glacier. When doing a full backup (the first time), it can take weeks, and it completely saturates the connection, making it unusable for browsing, watching video, etc. I was able to limit traffic only from the NAS, letting other traffic proceed at full speed, and do it on a schedule - only during my lunch hour and after work on weekdays, and all day on weekends (at night it goes at full speed). It also has some great charting features, and the web UI updates in real time without postback/refresh. In includes a free Windows UI as well. It seems to have every feature you need for a professional network - far too many protocols and features to list here. Lots of logging and diagnostic tools built into the UI. I also set it up as a PPTP VPN client, and a L2TP/IPSEC server.I have only a few minor gripes:1. Conceptually it seems very different from many other routers, which makes for a fairly steep learning curve. But there is lots of information online. The terminology used in the UI and the documentation seems very odd at first until you realize that it is using firmware-centric concepts like "queues" to limit bandwidth. It makes perfect sense when you realize that the docs were written by the programmers.2. There is insufficient safeguards built in to prevent the user from disconnecting himself. Occasionally I would need to change IP addresses for an interface, or in a firewall rule, and because I forgot to change something else that depends on it, the router would reset and I would become disconnected and unable to connect at all, even after changing IP address on the client. The gripes above are caused by the fact that is not really a consumer-level router, it's a professional-level router.3. The reset button function is time based: if you hold it for a certain length of time it will do a software reset, and for a longer time it will do a reset to factory settings. This is very frustrating at times - I can rarely get it to factory reset. Why not spend the extra 15 cents for a new button, and the 2 cents for a new hole in the case?

Does not seem suitable for gigabit internet connections
Summary:I think that the quality of this router is undisputed; it's a cheap but very powerful router with a great OS (MikroTik RouterOS) for configuration. Is it overwhelming to the uninitiated? Yes. Can you learn it? Yes. Or, can you ignore most things you see in the router configuration and focus on what you need? Yes. I would assume as a router with less 400 Mbps traffic through it, it would be absolutely fantastic for both a home and an office. With the features RouterOS provides, it's amazing it's the price it is. However, I found out a little too late that it appears to be insufficient to handle a 1 Gbps internet connection. If you are in that group, do not expect this thing to keep up.Some details regarding the major complaint:Basically, after unpacking and plugging in the connection to the internet and to my computer (i.e. plug & play), I only achieved about 250-300 Mbps through the router. After doing a little research, what you need to do is use the profiler to find out what's taking CPU time and thus slowing down your speeds. It was interesting to see that CPU usage was maxing out at 100% with about 45% coming from applying firewall rules. At this point, some Googling revealed that it's optimal to apply a setting to the default forward on established/related connections (assuming you are using a NAT network) called fasttrack. I enable fasttrack on the rule, and it was successful in increasing performance. I was able to achieve about 730/830 Mbps, but that's still about a >10% hit to my maximum speed by directly connecting my computer to the gigabit connection (I can achieve about 830/930 Mbps directly). Surprisingly, even with fasttrack enabled, CPU usage was hitting 100% during speed testing. I will monitor occasionally for comments, so if I see anything, I may try out any suggestions. I just don't think it's acceptable to think that using a router should entail a 100 Mbps speed hit.Pros:1. Great OS for configuration with tons of powerful features (you may not use them, but if you were choosing between this and something more expensive, this may serve your needs).2. Very small and compact.3. Would probably serve most configurations very well without a problem.Cons:1. Seemingly cannot handle 1 Gbps internet connections without needing either A) significant configuration changes that don't apply to most people (and thus, online help becomes more difficult to find) or B) an upgraded model that has a faster CPU.2. When working with specialized problems, online help may be much harder to find and utilize.
