Q: Why use stainless steel instead of brass?

Whoever it was that said smoking out of brass or using brass screens is bad, you are wrong!! There's nothing wrong with using brass screens, other than the fact that they are very thin and flimsy. I'm a plumber of 38 years and I'm telling you that brass doesn't give off the poisonous gas that is associated with copper. NEVER EVER use copper to smoke out of!! The plus side of using stainless steel is that the screens last much longer than their brass cousins. Back in the day when I was a kid there weren't any stainless screens available, so brass was your only option. Same went with chrome metal pipes. You see, underneath that chrome is brass!! Nuff said!!

Q: Can I cut these to a smaller size if needed?

I don't know. I ordered these about 6 months ago and never got them.

Q: Should I get a 3/4 in screen for a 1/2 in diameter pipe?

I use a screw on cap. The 1/2" doesn't block the threads.
