Tom Sawyer

Was feeling nostalgic
Was thinking about this movie for a long time and decided to see if they had it on Amazon. Sure enough they did. Loved this move was a child. Can’t want to share it with my grandson. He is always in trouble too. lol

Nothing beats Mark Twain
With all the attempts in the past, I’m surprised that none of them really gets at the heart of Mark Twain, or captures the personality of Tom Sawyer. This version wasn’t terrible and there was some quality acting, but the music did not add much in my personal opinion (and I do have a musical theater background) and I felt that Tom wasn’t the confident mischief we read in the books. It appeared to me that he and Huck were nearly the same personality (really, it seemed every boy was generically portrayed), whereas in the books they are very unique from one another. I thought Elijah Wood’s performance in another Twain adaptation was closer to a Tom personage (even though he plays a Huck!). At any rate, it’s common opinion that books are always better than their film adaptations and no doubt this would be true for a classic by brilliant Mark Twain. However, I was surprised that even my 8 year olds (who, like most kids, always get excited for sanctioned screen time) were disappointed that the movie wasn’t more reflective of the book.

"Old timey" movie loved by the family
My 10 year old son loved this movie! Although it was "Old timey" it still portrays important and relevant social issues. The acting and scenery were top notch. Highly recommended to check this movie out.

Lifelong favorite!
I saw this in the theater as a child. Later as an adult I was thrilled to find and buy the VHS for my kids, and now I've shared the digital movie with my grandkids. We all love this version of Tom Sawyer. I wish they made more movies like this now. There is adventure and fun for all ages. Although there is singing, the action never stops and the story continues to move along. Even kids don't notice the singing because there are no dull parts. This should be a family favorite for EVERYONE. I give this an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up! Having said that, the character, Muff Potter, is an alcoholic who does drink in the movie. Tom and Huck laugh about it, which I don’t like, but in the end, Tom expresses disappointment in Muff saying, “Aw Muff you haven’t changed a bit.” He also tells Huck he needs to become responsible. Aunt Polly scolds Tom when he lies and makes poor choices throughout the movie, so it is clear he needs to straighten up. I see this as an opportunity to discuss life choices and the direction your life takes because of those choices. Tom’s life improves because of the lessons he learns and the good choices he begins to make.

Love this movie
It is a used dvd but it was in good condition. Came package well. I was worried it wasn’t going to be in good shape and I wanted to buy new but the price was to high for me brand new. Glad I chose used. Love this movie.

Gratifaction!
From the musical genius of the Sherman Brothers, (Mary Poppins), comes this delightful musical film adaptation of the Mark Twain's classic story. Filmed entirely in Missouri, it has a colorful, exciting and an authentic flare transversing us from our modern world to the nostalgic Mississippi river haven of the early 1800's. Johnny Whitaker (Family Affair) makes a lovable Tom, "you Tom", while veteran Celeste Holm owns the Aunt Polly character. Warren Oats warms the heart as Muff Potter and portrayed him much how I envisioned Muff to be as I read the book. Jeff East (soon to be seen in "Superman"), had a spunky, sneering quality that provided East with a sequel. Last but not least, is an up comer Jodie Foster who plays Becky Thatcher. You can see her rare talent early on in this 1973 film. From river queen boats to white-washed fences and a dead cat in a cemetery, this charmer will have you singing along, and then watching it all over again. It was my childhood favorite.

Memorable film, medocre DVD release...
This is my second favorite film adaptation (behind the Selznick version) that I've seen. Some of the songs aren't quite outstanding but nothing is below "okay". Some of the songs, such as the beautiful Charlie Pride ballad used as the theme song, really get to me since the writer of the song was able to encapsulate part of what Twain was doing with this material. Whitaker as Tom, who I grew up watching in Family Affair and Sigmund & the Seamonsters (where's the complete series release of Sigmund anyway?!), shows some talent for this material and Jeff East as Huck is about perfect. I'm always left with a good feeling as the credit roll and happy I picked up this DVD to replace a lacking VHS I recorded. With that said, this DVD is mediocre and in need some a new release. This film represents kid's musicals of the time, along with Oliver!, etc, and should get more respect than MGM has done here. That's not to say the VHS is better, not by a long shot. Many shots are just fine, others have a graininess that was probably always there, but with some work this could be a cleaned up widescreen print that would make us fans happy. Probably won't ever get it...but if it ever comes (blu ray would be nice!) then they will sell at least one copy of it to me. Never can tell, what with all the PC nonsense that made the news recently about Twain's writings. Seems there are those who don't understand Twain in the least. Maybe they need to read the darn books!

Tom Sawyer-Childhood Memories
In searching to purchase this video, I read the reviews on amazon.com of Tom Sawyer on DVD and I was confused. The reviews went from 5-star to 1-star. But I haven't seen the movie in about 30 years and wanted to see it again so I went ahead and ordered it. I have to say I am so glad I did. From the moment I put it on I was transformed back to Radio City Music Hall where I saw it for the first time. I even remembered a lot of the songs, they just came back to me, and back in the day we didn't get to see the movies over and over again where we could memorize the songs. I didn't encounter some of the visual problems that other reviewers had. It may be a little dark in a few scenes, but I could overlook that for a trip down memory lane. Definitely worth it if you were a fan in the 70s. Tom Sawyer

The film is great!
It's a shame about the quality of the recording. It's pixelated on a 24 in HD computer monitor but is much better when put through a quality Blu-ray player and up scaled. This is such a wonderful, happy family film it deserves much better treatment from the manufacturers. Also it's a bit pricy. I love this version so much, if they brought out a Blu-ray version I would buy it and give it 10 stars.

Tom Sawyer, the 1973 musical movie on VHS
This is a film I remember from my childhood, and have very occasionally thought of since. I specifically remembered the courtroom scene with Injun Joe throwing a knife at Tom Sawyer, then jumping out of the courtroom window to the ground far below - a very impressive stunt - and it turned out my recollection of it from nearly 40 years ago was very good.Anyway, watching the movie brought back quite a few memories, and the film itself was a real joy to watch - full of excellent characterisation and fun, with music that, in my opinion, has stood the test of time. Other reviews I've read have been a bit lukewarm, but I think it's great - one of those forgotten classics. Highly recommended, and the seller I bought it from, rloblue59, was top class.
