Strange Circumstances
Book of Enchantments (1996) is a Fantasy collection containing ten short stories, a recipe, and Notes from the Author. Five stories are published here for the first time. Five previously appeared in various anthologies. Two are Enchanted Forest tales. - Rikiki and the Wizard (1986) is about an ambitious wizard and a blue chipmunk god. - The Princess, the Cat, and the Unicorn (1987) concerns a narcissistic unicorn in the Enchanted Forest. - Roses by Moonlight (1996) examines the futures of a jealous sister. - The Sixty-Two Curses of Caliph Arenschadd (1993) considers the problems of a grand vizier -- and his family -- serving a magical caliph who is hard to please. - Earthwitch (1996) confronts an arrogant leader with his former lover. It is the oldest tale in this collection. - The Sword Seller (1990) is a Witch World tale involving a strange god. - The Lorelei (1994) introduces the German siren within a modern setting. - Stronger Than Time (1994) provides an alternative version of Sleeping Beauty. - Cruel Sisters (1996) is a tale of three sisters, in which the eldest and youngest always quarrel. The middle sister is the mediator between the other two. - Utensile Strength (1996) exposes the origins of the Frying Pan of Doom. The King and Queen of the Enchanted Forest sponsor a tournament and cookoff to learn who will wield the weapon. - Quick After-Battle Triple Chocolate Cake (1996) is not a story, but a recipe for a dessert mentioned in the previous story. - Notes from the Author tells the origins of these stories.Recommended for Wrede fans and for anyone who else enjoys tales of various magics, unusual creatures, and personal troubles.-Arthur W. Fairy tale re-working before it got all gothic and "edgy"
I wanted so hard to read this when I saw it in connection with Wrede's "Enchanted Forest Chronicles." I was disappointed at first when I found that only 2 of the 10 stories are connected with the Enchanted Forest universe, and only one of those directly with Cimorene, but they were all either pretty good or fist-pumpingly awesome. It's a grab bag with "Book of Enchantments," because while all of them are fairy tale or fantasy related, some are more comic while others are darker, more tragic, or more "adult" feeling for a change of pace. And underneath this all, some times more obvious than others, there is an strong feminist theme, because, from what I've read of Wrede, that's her thing. Part of the reason why her heroines are likable is because they have brains.

A well-written, fun book
It was a really cute book. I expected just a little different from the way it actually was, but it was still good. Don't get this one if you think it's a continuation of the Enchanted Forrest series. It's actually a bunch of little short stories, that really have nothing to do with each other. I think Wrede is a great writer, and the book is worth a read or six. I do believe that the King and Queen of the Enchanted Forrest do make an appearance :)

More Wrede!
This is a must for fans of Patricia C. Wrede. It's full of short stories and even includes one from the Enchanted Forest (think "Dealing with Dragons.") Most include a bit of humor, if not a lot of humor. One gets pretty serious, but it still has class. It's good to read if you have a busy schedule because one story doesn't take very long, and it still packs the classic Wrede punch.

Childhood Memories
Oh. My. God.I remembered so many of these stories from when I was a child, but had no idea what happened to the book as I got older. After some intense googling I FOUND IT and I am SO EXCITED to get a hard copy to put on the shelf in the house for my kids.

great book
I found the first enchanted forest chronicle book in a thrift shop and fell in love with the series. This book is a collection of short stories that goes with the series, if you love the rest of the series this is a must have

Not as good as the Enchanted Forest Chronicles
I was hoping for more of the enchanted forest stories in this book. While it had 2, most of the rest of the short stories were of a darker theme. While they were good, they weren't what I expected.

More great stories from this fantasy world
I absolutely adore the books that Patricia C. Wrede has written that all belong to the same world. The Book of Enchantments is no exception. Her books have stuck with me for decades and it was very refreshing to read this volume as it provided some new content that I hadn't previously read.

Loved this book!
I originally read "The Enchanted Forest Chronicles" by Patricia C. Wrede when I was in high school, and I fell in love with the books. When I saw this one, I had to buy it and read it. I definitely don't regret my purchase. It was a fun read, the short story format was appealing.Overall, a very good read, and I would recommend to anyone from children to adults who are young at heart.
