What is the purpose of the zipper on top of the red pocket in the front zipper pocket? It just unzips into nothing? For What?

There is absolutely no reason for that zipper I have found , because leaving it unzipped leaves the pocket less sturdy as I use it for my flashlight spare knife &compass
