Karlsson on the Roof

My 9 year old loved it! Easy to read, large font

My favorite book since early childhood, I have read and reread this novel and all of its subsequent parts too many times to count. This is a book for kids by arguably the most talented kids' writer that's ever lived. Lindgren remembered what it was like to be a child when she wrote, and it's obvious. Reading her writings is effortless and all-encompassing. I gladly drown in Karlsson On The Roof again and again. This novel is not nearly as well-known here as it is in Europe, and what a shame. American kids have been missing out for decades.

If you buy this for an American kid be aware that the translation is very, very British. A lot of colloquial expressions used in characters speech will be unfamiliar or strange even for a kid that watches Peppa Pig, Ben and Holly and other British shows. Character names are "translated", sometimes bizarrely (e.g. Jemima), presumably to make them friendly or "diverse". (But, if you do that, why is currency left untouched as kronor and ore?)The story is still the same but be prepared to "work" on it to make it enjoyable for a kid.

I have never written any reviews about any books, but this one really deserves it.It's about very typical little kid in Sweden, who meets very unusual person Karlsson. Karlsson has his own tiny propeller on his back & he lives on the roof of the kid's house. Together they play, eat plushki, and get into trouble with parents, babysitters, thieves, & the entire world.This book is the happiest memory of my russian childhood. Not Pippi Longstocking, not even Harry Potter (whom i liked very much) can compare with Karlsson. Please, somebody, bring this book to american kids!

This book is about a 7-year old boy and his unusual friend, Karlsson, who has a little cozy house, which is strangely located...on the roof. At first, noone believes the little boy. Everyone thinks that the boy is lonely and bored, and that he made himself an imagenary friend. However, how much his mom, dad, brother and sister are surprised when they find out that this little man really exists...I read this book when I was 7 years old in Russia, and this book has stayed as one of the greatest memories from my childhood. It is great that Astrid Lindgren's books are translated into English. I only wish that American kids will get a chance to read/listen to these books. I have a copy of it, which I've read to my little son several times, and he loves it.So, if you ever come across a copy of this book, please, read it. Once you start, you wouldn't be able to stop.And, yes, it is as good as or maybe even better than Harry Potter.

Karlsson-on-the-Roof by Astrid Lindgren, translated by Sarah Death is plain bad and boring. It was my favorite book, when I was little. I red my book to my kids in Russian and they loved it!!! They never enjoyed the new edition at all!!! How sad, that bad translation killed the most wonderful book on Earth.I can suggest to read the "Emil " books, much better translation by Lilian Seaton and much better illustrations.
