Plenty sharp right out the box.
Cuts easily compared to those disposable plastic razors. I love it. The leather strap that came with the knife works as it should. Would most definitely recommend to anyone looking to have a reusable solution to their razor usage.

Bought as a gift... instant regret.
The reason I gave this 3 stars: the package arrived on time, the item itself was not broken, and it came with a little sheath that is fairly decent. My boyfriend has shaved with a straight razor forever... and he has sharpened his current one so much that the edge is just gone- hence why I thought he could use a new one.I should have sprung for something better. I was sold based on it coming with a sharpening strap, and it being cherry wood and japanese steel... I know nothing about straight razors but it sounded nice.Wrong.The box showed up looking like it had been drop-kicked and crushed... and I'm not talking about the amazon packaging. Nope. I'm talkin' the product box itself. I was like "huh... that sucks... but I didn't buy it for the box..." and still opened the box full of (unwarranted) optimism.I could sit here and ramble on listing every issue I had with this.... bit I'm just gonna hit the main points.-The wood looks similar to the color in the picture, but the quality leaves much to be desired. It honestly looks.. sort of worn-in. Lackluster.-the blade is not sharp. I ran it over the top of my arm to see if it would take off any hair. I went over a spot half a dozen times... you'd think doing that so many times would irritate someone's skin- especially someone with fairly sensitive skin like me... but it just made that spot look kind of ashy. It basically has the sharpness level of something in-between a butter knife... and the back of a butter knife. Every hair still remains. (Mind you, I am not very hairy. I have been asked countless times if/why I shave my arms.... I do not. My arm hair is basically less dense peach fuzz. Thin and so light that it's almost clear colored... so it's not like I was trying to take on a thick strong patch of hair here).I digress...-The (dull) blade has a sticker on it. It was not covering the the blade's shaving edge (I'd say "sharp part" but, as previously stated, that term unfortunately does not apply here). The sticker covers most of one entire side of the blade. This wouldn't be a huge deal except the clear plastic sticker left residue behind! It's now very sticky. Also worth mentioning- to their credit, the blade is coated in a very thin layer of oil (to prevent the steel from rusting). But since one side of it was covered with the (gross sticky residue causing) sticker, it was not oiled. Luckily there's no rust currently, but... still. Very dumb.-Made in China... and is painfully evident.- The sharpening strap is cheap. Even when I was finalizing the purchase, I never really had high hopes that it would be anything marvelous, but I thought it'd at least get the job for a little while. Honestly, I haven't attempted to use it... and after seeing it, I'm apprenhensive about doing so. The edges look a bit frayed and... well you can just tell it's no good. It's dollar-store quality.*sigh*I'm not a straight razor user so I don't know how far they usually open. So just as a note to anyone curious... I thought it would open and lock into place like a pocket knife, like 180 degrees... however, it opens far passed that... it doesn't lock open or closed... you open it and it and it'll keep opening until the blade flips like 340 degrees and the back hits the handle part. The best way I can think to put it is that I expected it to open (picture a clock face) to 6 o'clock and stop, but it actually keeps going all the way around to 11 o'clock and doesn't lock into place anywhere along the way... it would keep spinning around and around except the handle stops it.I could continue to pick it apart but here's the nutshell:I am still planning to give him the razor but I may just *imply* that it's an antique lol.. (don't judge me... I just prefer for him to think it's the way it is because it's old- since he likes some antique-y things anyway- rather than being like "Here's a birthday present for you that turned out to be a cheap piece o' crap. Sorry. Enjoy." I likely will not even include the strap.I would just return it but it's too late for me to find a replacement.Basically I just typed a million words to say one thing... don't bother with this... save your money... spring for something better. Don't do what I did 😬

Needs to be sharper
I took a chance on a product with no reviews at the time and it was a gamble I lost. The product claims to be shave ready out of the box which was definitely not the case with my thick whiskers. Got a stone to sharpen this, watched some videos since I never sharpened one of these before. Maybe I didn’t do a great job of sharpening it but it was sharper than it was originally. Now it actually can shave but still not sharp enough to give a clean, comfortable shave. While my sharpening technique may be novice keep in mind this is a product that is supposed to be sharpened before delivery and ready for a shave as soon as you take it out of the box which is definitely not the case. I may be nee to sharpening these kinds of blades but I know what a sharp blade feels like and this is not it.

Dull blade.
Dull blade, does not cut. Even after sharpening it is a very mediocre straight razor.

Cannot get sharp enough to shave
I have been unable to get this sharp enough to actually shave. I've used 400-8000 grit whetstones and while it cuts paper just fine it won't shave.

Rusted after one use
Hubby used it once then it rusted and the handle was falling apart

This is great!
I am learning to use a straight razor and this is perfect. I don't think I'm a pro yet but this has help me improve my skill a bunch. Thanks you.
