Authentic Genno Hammer. Made in Niigata, Japan.
This is a traditional Japanese woodworking hammer made with quality and care as has been done for centuries. The quality and craftsmanship is excellent. The carbon steel head is a finely tuned mixture of ingredients to create a designed ratio of hardness and softness to yield the perfect striking tool for woodworking. The shape, size, weight and overall design of the head has so many uses. There are so many options on how to use the hammer. The rounded face lets you hit off angle and with larger swings. The flat face is for smaller strikes that need to be perpendicular at 90 making it perfect for striking a rounded surface like the head of a chisel. Even the sides of the hammer head are made for striking. They allow for use in tight spaces. The handle is made from a hard and more dense Japanese Oak variety. It has a wonderful feel to it. A wedge connection keeps the hammer head on the handle. At 14.1 oz it is the perfect weight for the tasks for which it was created. From starting and nailing finish nails, to chiseling, and adjusting planes, it is a finely crafted tool that any woodworker would appreciate.

Arrived with crack in steel head
Arrived with crack in steel head, difficult to see. Crack extends around 5 sides of the hexagon head shape. Used a sharpie to try and highlight the crack like dye penetrant test. Cleaned with alcohol. Was able to see slight amount of bleed. I don't think the sharpie soaked into the crack. I'm sure it is a crack because of how it extends around the sides and its shape. I've seen many fatigue cracks in life as an engineer in the aircraft industry. Manufacturer contacted and they just said to return it. They didn't seem surprised or ask to explorer the issue further even though I offered to return so they could see crack directly and determine what went wrong. By their response I guess the crack is a fairly common issue.I hate to leave this negative review because I have bought this exact product before and love it. I also bought the next size up and love it to. The construction is a thing of beauty. The hammers are slightly unfinished as are many Japanese tools allowing user to finish how they want. The unfished part of this hammer is there is not coating on the handle and the bottom edge of handle has a sharp edge that needs rounding in my opinion. I used a light stain (Old English furniture touch-up) to bring out the wood grain, rounded the end with fingernail filing boards then used brown Scotch-brite pad to add a little texture to the surface for my desired grip. These are so nice looking I don't like hitting on steel nails because it mars the face. Head has some type of clear coat on it. The rounded end really does work well to sink finish nails on the last strike without using a punch.

High quality, simple tool that gets the job done
This Japanese woodworking/carpentry hammer is a dream to use. I’m a tinkerer and love working on wood projects around the house, and this is a perfect size for most uses. The build quality is high even though the product is quite simple. It’s replaced my old hammer that came in a standard tool kit and feels like an upgrade. And hey, it looks quite beautiful as well. One side of the hammer is flat and the other is slightly domed. I’ve yet to fully get the hang of when to use which side, but I like the extra functionality. The only thing I’ll say critically is that the handle could be a bit more dense. It’s a bit imbalanced in the hand. But the wood is smooth and I have no fear of getting splinters.

Great hammer
I have a set of chisels by Kakuri and I love them. They are really great quality and I thought I'd get this hammer, too, when I had a chance. I am planning on purchasing their wood plane soon and this hammer will work with that. The tools are really excellently made. I haven't used it with the chisels yet, but I did use it to nail in small nails in the wall. It's very comfortable to hold, doesn't mar the surrounding wall, and is a very sturdy, well-made tool. This is also recommended for use with the Kakuri Kanna planer, and that is next on my list.

Interesting variation on a small hammer
This is the first time I've tried out this Japanese design for a small hammer. This implementation seems well made with a properly machined head and a very smoothly finished hardwood handle. The handle is longer and thinner than I'm accustomed to for this weight of hammer, but I suspect that is just a matter of differences between traditional Western hammers and Japanese ones. You can see in my photo that I used a sharpie to Mark which head is a flat face and which has a curved face. It's a really neat idea which again I've never seen on a western hammer. Having both sides flat as an alternative striking surface in small spaces is a great idea. I must admit I've occasionally pressed my traditional Western hammers into that use, but they clearly are not designed to be used that way.

Japanese Steel 300 Gram Octagonal Head Hammer,12 inch Wooden Handle, Flush and Convex Faces
I love woodworking and also do some metal jewelry work with copper, brass, etc. I was attracted to this fine tool by the head having a slightly curved out face as well as one that is flush. The curve is quite subtle and I will mark the hammer with a Sharpie on the side of the flat face to easily distinguish between the two faces. The handle is made of oak and is not varnished nor is it oiled. The hammer has good hand feel and balance at 14.1 ounces (300 Grams). I liked the polished Japanese Steel head faces. This is made by a Japanese Company (Kakuri) with a tradition of handcrafting fine tools since 1946 in Japan. That accounts for the high price.I Recommend this KAKURI Chisel Hammer 300g, Japanese Woodworking Carpenter Hammer for Chisel, Plane, Nail, Heavy Duty Japanese Carbon Steel Octagonal Head Silver, Made in JAPAN. Sweet tool!I hope you’ve found the information and my review helpful.
