The music of Don Shirley

Believe the reviews
It takes one note - for others who searched after the movie & decided on this CD of original Don Shirley instead ofthe film soundtrack, the reviews are spot on. This is enchanting. I was basically farting around the house, put on the cd, heard the first note of the first track - and came to a halt. It is totally fabulous.

Don Shirley is one of the greats
I have been a fan of Don Shirley's recordings for many years and have purchased most of his albums available at Amazon and I recommend them all, however these is some duplication of sone of the performances on the various disks. I am happy with all of them, however. Before these CD's were available I only had the Water Boy LP available. This was probably the best of Don Shirley's recordings and it is available on these re-releases. If you only get one, be sure to get Water Boy.

Astounding Music!
I had watched the movie: "Green Book" and loved the movie. It details musician Don Shirley as he toured the deep south, this was the time of racial segregation, though many loved his music, they wouldn't let him stay in hotels or eat in restaurants. The cd contains 18 selections. Shirley learned piano at the age of 2 and obtained a bachelor's degree in music in 1953, classical music was his love, director Sol Hurok told him that audiences were not ready to hear a black man play classical. He marched at Selma and was a favorite of Duke Ellington. His music is tinged with classical references. One hit was Water Boy. He also had a version of Ray Charles Drown in My Own Tears. Standards include Georgia, At Last, Just for a Thrill, Old Man River and My Funny Valentine, some have organ touches. R&B standards also included are Amen and Stand By Me. Also recommended is The Best of Don Shirley which features some duplicates . Groundbreaking Artist, not deterred by the racial inequality of the times.
