Exactly As Described!
These books are a timeless wonder for the imagination of a child. I purchased my first of this book series as a boy at a schoolbook fair. I read it as a small boy, as a teenager, and as an adult. The way the book is written will spark your imagination. This series allows me to now provide this wonderful set to my grandchildren. Even my granddaughters loved these books!

thrilling horse stories as wonderful today as they were when written
All the books about Walter Farley’s fictitious horse The Black hold very fond memories from my childhood, and this collection of 4 novels about The Black, including the exciting adventure of the first book in the series, brings back those memories in wonderful detail. The idea is simple: a teen boy and his horse, but Mr. Farley has written a series of masterpieces.Young Alec Ramsay is returning to America on the steamship, the Drake. After traveling a long way, the Drake makes one stop that changes Alec’s life forever. At a small port a huge wild black stallion is loaded in the Drake’s hold. Alec is amazed and thrilled to see the untamed savagery of the big back horse. Days later there is a terrible storm which destroys the ship. Alec is determined to give the wild stallion a chance to escape, too, and he unlatches the door of the horse’s stall. Later waiting by the rail for his chance at a lifeboat, the stallion appears on deck and rushes toward an opening, accidentally bumping Alec and causing him to fall overboard. Frantically trying to find a lifeboat in the storm tossed sea, Alec feels something swish by him in the water and realizes it is the rope attached to the Black’s halter. Alec grabs it.That’s just the beginning of the saga. Alec spends weeks on a small desert island completely alone except for the big horse and the relationship they build together is an incredible story to read. You will be enchanted by Alec’s return home, astonishing his parents when he shows up with the big stallion. How Alec befriends an ex-jockey named Henry Dailey and how together they train the Black will keep you hooked from beginning to end.I first read The Black Stallion as a 7th grader, and haunted the library until I had gone through the rest of the series, and each book brought the story of a racehorse and the boy who loved him to life with realism that’s hard to beat. Mr. Farley brings you into Alec’s life with amazing detail, so you feel you know this plucky kid. You go with him through the ups and downs of his life, happily satisfied as Alec and Henry train the Black and the amusing way they finally get their chance to have the Black race. You feel like you’re there watching and relishing the descriptions of the races Alec rides.I suppose it is really a story written for young teens, but rereading everything as an adult, I felt the same amazement and enjoyment all over again. It isn’t written as a child’s novel. It will hold the interest of anyone who loves to read an exciting adventure horse story.
