Does anyone know if the clips that hold the laptop in place have any sort of cushioning or is it just plain plastic, like will it scratch your device?

They’re plastic but it comes with 2 rubber/silicone covers to protect the laptop from getting scratched.

Can you turn off the LCD display?

Yes you can... there are two buttons. One for the power and other for the lights. Press and hold the button for the LCD lights for about 2-3 secs and they turn off while the cooling pad fans will continue to run. To turn the LCD lights back on repeat the same process and they’ll turn back on.
