Brand New Blu-ray Player External USB DVD Rw Laptop Burner Drive Black

if i could i would give this drive a 0. owned since september but only used for about a months time to watch a few blurays...hasnt been used since and started to use again recently, played 1 bluray and now it wont read blurays anymore..only dvd's will read and play...it sounds as if it wont recognize there is even a disc inside when trying to use as a bluray player, just makes a slight sound and nothing...this is a faulty product and has a bad reputation. it saddens me to know that faulty products are intentionally sold and distributed even though they are of poor quality. please do yourself a favor, spend the xtra coin and buy a reliable drive...from a reliable company...

It does what its supposed to do... sometimes... and occasionally it'll skip a scene on a new disc because its "damaged," but its decent enough. I really wish the cords were longer and that the power was supplied externally and not from the computer. Other than that it plays discs and makes a lot of noise.I've seen a lot of crap reviews about the apple disc player, but my roommate has one and it works great compared to this. So if you're researching, I'd recommend the expensive Apple product compared to this.

I bought this to create digital copies of my Blu-ray and DVD collection for backup and on the go use. This drive is pure plug and play! Connected to my laptop running Windows 8 and used MakeMKV (costs $50 after trial) to create a test digital copy without much effort! I agree with other reviewers about the flimsy plastic enclosure. VLC media player can be used to play the default mkv format or handbrake (open source video transcoder) can be used to convert the video to a variety of different formats.

This Blu-ray drive works very well in my setup. It feels kind of flimsy and you have to use both hands to get your discs in and out but it performs well with Blu-rays and CDs both. Depending on where you place it you may have some difficulty pushing the eject button because the drive is very light. But I think it's a good solution for the money.

removed the unit from the external case and installed it in a small ITX HTPC I put together. It is the same type of unit used in laptops so it tends to be fragile. Works as advertised.

It worked like it was supposed to. As a dvd player worked fine with only cable hook up. I have't tried burning yet, blue ray did not work without external power supply.But it is a good buy.

SW that comes with it is clunky to say the least, it's also just annoying to hook up. wouldn't buy again

This drive is an Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S that is connected to a Raspberry Pi (wheezy). This finely-made drive also works under XP (after loading the provided driver), OS X, & several flavors of linux (kubuntu 13.04, 11.10, 8.04, & Fedora 16). There is no external identification of the drive -- the instructions are in Chinese with some "English".The Raspberry Pi recognized the drive & loaded the proper drivers once it was connected through a powered USB hub.Bought the drive because of its DVD RW capability; it can read the directories of a Blu-Ray disk but the trial version of Total Media Theater Platinum & Nero-8.3.6.0_chs_trial would not run under XP.
