A great activity book that really caught our kids' imaginations!
I bought this book for my grandchildren, aged 5 & 7. I am very impressed with the layout and content. It is full of information about Space and the Universe, and is presented in a user-friendly and interactive format, and it has captured the imaginations of my grandchildren. They love telling me about everything they’ve learnt from the book, and we have already tried several of the activities. I can see that there is plenty to keep them going for some time yet, so we are hoping for plenty of cloudless starry nights! Overall, I thoroughly recommend this book to any parent or grandparent looking for a source of activities to entertain and educate their children.

Star Person
The 'You Can' series of books are an enthusiastic set of text that have been designed to get our youths thinking about something and then doing something about it. 'Explore the Universe' is a tricky one as you cannot blast a child into space, but you can get them to star gaze and learn more about the science. This book is ideal for an engaged child who likes the science or space. The book is fully colour, and a double spread will cover a topic, there may be some facts, illustrations and perhaps an experiment to try out. Although colourful, it is a little dry for a child who does not like non-fiction, but for those that do and getting their hands dirty, there is plenty of ideas in this volume.

An excellent book
This book is by an astronomer, astrophotographer, author and science communicator who’s based in London. His name is Tom Kerss and I have to say he’s done a great job with this book - I’m so happy that he covered the 13 zodiac signs, something none of my books ever did. There are interesting ’Did you know?’ and ‘Tip!’ boxes, and also writing and drawing activities throughout the book to really help getting children engaged. If you have children (or even adults) who love the stars and want to learn more about space then this book is an amazing starting place.Overall: A great book for those seeking a basic understanding of the universe, one they can build on through the years

Fantastic introduction to space for youngsters
As a keen backyard astronomer, I love all things space and try to get my nieces interested in it too. STEM subjects can be a little inaccessible for children unless they are delivered in a fun, engaging way—this book does absolutely that. It's odd becuase I have a large refractor telescope that they couldn't care less about, even when pointed at the moon. But give them this book and they are captivated.YOU CAN explore the universe covers so many different things and needs no equipment apart from a clear, dark night, and perhaps a little imagination. While there are activities such as; creating a pinhole projector and simulating meteor impacts in flour, pretty much everything else is just looking up and thinking. There are engaging activities such as drawing the constellations and planets, colouring them as they appear. The book highlights the more prominent asterisms and constellations, showcasing the deep stories behind them all.Every page is vibrant with bold colours and high-quality images, the writing is clear and accessible. It really turns something that could be daunting and boring into almost a game, awash with facts and fun.As an introduction to space, this is pretty peerless and would be great for children of all ages.

You Can Explore the Universe
One in a series of "You Can..." books from Collins. It's a "how to..." and guidebook for children who are interested in learning more about space and astronomy..There are over 40 activities and information pages including - Download a Planetarium (this is the Stellarium app which is used quite a bit throughout the book), Constellation Spotting, Finding the North Star, Recording a Lunar Cycle, Investigating Lunar Craters, record a meteor shower, spot Venus in a blue sky, the Northern Lights and much more. The book is absolutely packed full of information and things to do. I love that there are spaces left for children to write their own thoughts/ideas and include their own drawings or photos. This book would be a wonderful gift for any child who has an interest in space and astronomy and I think would help create an interest in children who hadn't thought about it before. As an adult I thought the book was great and had lots of things for me to look for in the night sky and things to do throughout the year with my children. It's a book that a family could use together. The only niggle is that I could have done without the pages on astrology, though they did try and talk about it from a more scientific point of view.Overall - great astronomy activity book.
