This Melissa and Doug wooden food puzzle is really simple and engaging and refreshingly made out of wood rather than plastic. We have loads of Melissa and Doug toys for our children and I found not only are they always well made and well finished but they last and will be able to be used by siblings if not passed on to other members of the family and friends as they really are very resilient. The educational seem helps with the idea of counting and also talking about fruits. Great value and ideal idea for a gift as you know it will last.

This is a well-made puzzle, with a sturdy wooden base board, and chunky alphabet letter pieces that are easy for small fingers to handle. The basic puzzle design seems quite plain – a striped base board, featuring a large picture of Blue in the bottom right-hand corner, with 26 colourful letter pieces decorated in a range of rainbow colours and featuring a pattern of swirls, dots, and paw prints. Underneath each letter, when it is lifted from the tray, is an image of something that starts with that letter – several of which are themed to Blues Clues characters. The pictures don’t have captions next to them (a pity), and instead a paper list of what each represents is included with the puzzle. It’s a good quality jigsaw. However, from an early learning perspective some things about this could be improved. The puzzle is in all upper case letters, but children are taught letter recognition and the beginning of reading and writing using lower case characters (usually with the exception of the letters starting names). There are also a couple of letters where the choice of image to represent the letter has the correct character alphabetically, but the sound it makes isn’t related to letter-sound based learning (‘I’ is represented by ‘ice cream’, but in letter-sound learning is taught as ‘i’ as in ‘ink’, and ‘X’ by ‘xylophone’). Plus ca change, plus c’est le meme chose – the alphabet jigsaw my grandma bought for me in the 1980s also had uppercase letters and ‘I’ represented by ‘ice cream’ and ‘X’ by ‘xylophone’. My Mum, who taught phonics even then, used this to teach me that sometimes letters don’t ‘say their sounds’, but the words are nevertheless written with those letters.

My son absolutely loves this blues clue alphabet puzzle. The quality is so good and the vibrant colours are very appealing to children! The illustrations are fantastic and I’m very happy with the quality. Great for travel.
