It does what it says on the tin
As a scentwork enthusiast I am always interested when a new work comes out especially when it is recommended by a world class dogman such as Simon Prins. This is an immensely practical book which does not waste time, print or pages on photographs which are totally unnecessary in a publication of this kind. However, do not be dismayed because, when you buy the book, you get access to the website which contains short videos to expand on the written word, where appropriate. The author also does not fall into the trap of trying to make the book all things to all people but focuses on the title; the book does exactly what is says on the tin. If you want to explore the olfactory function of a dog including turbinates and the vomeronasal organ, or the science of operant conditioning, look elsewhere.Paul also emphasises the fact that there Is no need for expensive specialist equipment which can intimidate the beginner and those of limited financial means. In addition there is a lack of unnecessary jargon and the book is written in a very accessible way.For those familiar with the (UK) Level 3 Award in Education and Training (PTLLS) or as it is called today AET (Award in Education and Training) this book is essentially a Scheme of Work including Session Plans with Assessments. This book is an excellent investment for those who would like to introduce their dog to this discipline but who cannot access workshops and/or would rather conserve their finances for progression opportunities. It is also makes no distinction between the hobby/professional approach therefore there is nothing in this book that would put the would be professional handler on the back foot so to speak. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Paul is at pains to stress the importance of training the dog in front of you and taking into account its abilities and qualities. To quote the book “Imprinting is one small, albeit critical, part of a detection dog’s repertoire and the aim of this workbook is to give you a starting point to train dogs in detection”I can confirm that it definitely meets the above criteria and is a great addition to the library of the enthusiast, handler and instructor.
