Does this provide at least 2A per port (and thus can be used as a charger for iPads and the like)?

From what I read in "Pocket PCRef" (ISBN 978-1-885071-40-8 pg 535) a powered hub provides 100 mA at power up, and up to 500 mA at normal operation. From this I'd assume the 500 mA (0.5 Amp) requirement is per port. I can't imagine a port delivering 2 full amps. I use it as a charger for everything with a USB connection. In my experience, it works well. Hope this helps.

What type of power adapter works with this? Will a ciagarette plug type adapter work to hook up to a 12 volt battery?

It takes 12V DC. I use a 12V 15A power supply for the one I have. I'd want something around 1.5A at least.

I currently have the 4 port but need more connections. could the 7 port be connected to the 4 for 11 ports?

Yes. You would need to use one of the 4 to hook up the 7port hub. So total you would have 10 (3+7) ports available.Keep in mind that this hub requires an external power source. You would need a DC Power supply to hook it up to the green plug you see in the picture along with the proper amperage output, depending on what you want to use the usb ports for.
