Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know

Dogology very well explained and shown.
A very well written and touching insight into dogs. Everyone who loves dogs and those who do not, should read this book, especially on a Kindle, much nicer and easier than holding a book. Kindle's dictionary is also a delight to use while reading, just highlight the word by pressing on it, so easy. Although dog lovers will know and understand a lot written here we need someone to tell us sometimes. Heartwarming and even as an owner for years it increased my understanding of the dogs point of view and why they do what they do and how clever and useful and good for our health they really are. Well done Alexandra. Absolutely loved it and I don't often read books.

Great book .... so much useful information .... thought provoking
I bought this after it was recommended in a private study group on FB. It's amazing. Really well written. Very thought provoking and makes so much sense. I now have a much better idea of how my hound's mind works and how the relationship between us and our canine friends has developed and continues to develop. Great book. Be aware though, it's c400 pages long, so in paperback is a small book and small writing - I need reading glasses!; but it is so worth getting and reading. I love it.

Wonderful insight into the Inside of a Dog
I read a review in the Oldie about this book and thought that it might join the other Dog Psychology books on the shelf, all bought in a vain attempt to understand and maybe even tame a very individual Lakeland Terrier. The book is far more readable than the Terrier herself and more readable than most of the other dog behaviour books we have. The writing assumes a degree of will to understand the way a dog's mind works and is serious enough to be taken seriously but readable enough for most people of moderate intelligence. Has it worked for the dog? Not yet but we hopeful and we Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know do understand why she is as she is and it helps us chuckle more and sigh less.

Everyone should read it
And i do mean everyone. Firstly, because apart from expressing love and humour and curiosity about dogs, this is a extremely entertaining book. Secondly, because there's far too much fear and dislike around dogs at the moment. Anyone who has a dog in a big city is aware that more people than ever are frightened of them. Some think that if a friendly dog sniffs their hand it transmits some terrible disease. Maybe this book can awaken them to the possibility that dogs are interesting, funny and good for you, and so what if you have to wash your hands more often?

Detailed Re Dogs
I've read about a third of this book to date and it is very informative about all issues relating to dogs senses etc. However I thought it would be more of an instructional guide focusing on the behaviour of dogs and any issues relating to such. The book may indeed cover such points but judging by what I have read to date I suspect this is not the case. Therefore I would recommend this book to those persons wishing to read about such things as dogs sight, hearing, history etc.

Inside a Dog
Anyone who has or had a dog, will be absolutely gripped to this book, I read it in an afternoon, not because it was a simplistic book, but because I couldn't put it down, i was crying out with laughter at the funny anecdotal stories . The author balances the scientific evidence of owning a dog, and a dog owners perspective. Very funny read; I'd say a good holiday book or a book to accompany a long haul flight. Very well balanced and written.

Dogs are more different than we thought
If a human can taste a spoon of sugar in a cup of tea, a dog could detect the same amount of sugar in the equivalent of two swimming pools put together. With this kind of example, Alexandra Horowitz manages to explain just how different dogs are. They don't usually get the hang of TV - but not because they are less clever than us. Their eyes work at a faster rate than ours so they see TV as a set of still pictures in most instances. A dog-lover myself and owner of five dogs in my lifetime, I still learnt a lot from 'Inside of a Dog'. I stopped seeing them as less intelligent than us. The truth is that they have different intelligences. A dog on a walk is stimulated in the same way as we are reading the newspaper or our emails or going to the cinema. But I did find the book a bit heavy stylistically. For all that I take my hat off to the author, I was relieved when I got to the end.
