GVM 1200D RGB Video Light

These are a great upgrade!
Please watch the video if you want to compare these 1200D to the 50GM.Ive been using the other GVM lights for a while now and while they do their job, I wanted more light and better quality LEDs for what I use them for. I was hesitant for a while (Im pretty sure i put them in and out of my cart 50x before actually pulling the trigger). But now that I did, Im very happy i did and could never go back! Dont get me wrong the 50GM are great lights, but in comparison to these, there is just no comparison. However it all depends on your budget. I was not looking at spending nearly $800 on lights in the beginning so I compromised. The good thing is the other lights are still very functional for other uses.Going over these, the video covers a lot on them so please give it a watchPros:* Metal frame* TONS of leds in each panel* App control* nice carrying case* tripods are higher quality* the lights are Extremely bright! With pros also comes a couple cons I found in them.* There is no multifunction control WITHOUT the app. On the 50gm you can do everything from the back panel, these you are essentially forced to use the app for other options. (You can still use RGB and White). Just no patterns* These are 11x9. Which is an odd size for led panels. I have some diffusers that are 11x11 opening and while it hugs it great, i havent found diffusers for the exact size

Great lights, horrible app and support
The LIGHTS:The GVM 1200D RGB 50W light is fantastic. Being able to change the hue of the light as well as an option for RGB is genius and makes these lights extremely convenient and useful for any lighting situation. The light stands leave a bit to be desired, but you get what you pay for. You'll have some issues angling them downward if the barn doors are fully open or if you have a softbox on them. The design of the barn doors also allows for light leaks, so get ready with the Gaffer's tape. Once you get used to it, it is quite easy to set the light settings on the back of the unit with the two knobs. They are plenty bright for my needs (small studio). They make brighter ones if you need more light. Don't get these lights for the "effects" they advertise, or the ability to manage them through an app (see below). You can set one as "primary" and the others as "secondary" which is nice ONLY if you need to have all of the other "secondary" lights mirror the exact settings of the "primary." Bluetooth distance limitations apply.I haven't measured the light output CRI, but I believe the highest CRI rating is only at either the 3200K or 4000K mark. The APP:The original "GVM Easily" app will NOT work with these, as that app is designed for WiFi connectivity. These lights use Bluetooth ONLY. The GVM II app requires you to sign up for an account (which is 100% completely unnecessary and just an excuse to harvest information from you - I recommend using a burner email for this purpose), and it also requires WAY more permissions on your phone than it should. When I finally got it connected to one of my lights, sure, I was able to turn it on/off, change settings, etc. which was "neat" at best. You can't easily name the lights, so you must remember which one based on its Bluetooth address (not human-readable). Oh, and you can only control one light at a time. Those nifty light modes they advertise? Yep, you can only enable them using the app. Conclusion:Just know what you are getting yourself into. You get what you pay for. I'd love to have more expensive lights, but these will do for now. As long as I'm still on a tight budget, I'll continue to purchase these lights, but I'll only use them in standalone mode - not with the app.OVERALL:GVM 1200D RGB Lights: B+Light stand: CMobile App: F

Bright LED lights for both videos and photos
I have been slowly switching over to LED lights, since they are more affordable and more powerful as well. I use them for both videography, and photography. They are more energy efficient too.- Bi-color mode, temp from 3200k to 5600k- RGB mode, from 0 to 360 degrees.- Pre-programmed 8 lighting scenes, for special effects.- Easy to control knobs to control color, and brightness.- LCD display to clearly show the settings.- Quite, no noise at all.- Support Sony F batteries, can be used for location shoots.- Comes with AC adaptor, perfect for indoor/studio.- Master/slave mode, to sync all the settings.- Smart phone app, can remotely control all the settings, makes everything easier.- Carrying case fits everything in one bag.- Compact light stands for each of the lights.I love how the GVM lights comes everything you need. Includes carrying case, stands, and etc. Make it so much easier for me to take with me on location for video shoots. The light itself is very bright!!! There are two knobs on the back of the each lights, control the Bi-color, RGB color and brightness. Also you can connect to the lights with the smartphone app, able to access all the settings remotely from the app. The app makes everything so much easier. They are very quite to use, perfect for doing interview videos. I have used the lights for both videos, and photos. Easy to setup, and bright enough for most of the shoots. Overall this is a great set of lights, for lighting up at least 20' x 20' stage. This adds so much more production values to my videos. I hope they come with softbox, it will help a lot when in need of softer light source.

Good Light with Unusable Features
When I bought this the special features/modes of the lights were being promoted heavily such as lightning storms and red/blue strobing. I see they mention but no longer promote these functions. Good thing because it was effectively false advertising. The android app was unusable on my tablet and when we tried the iphone app it kept asking for a pin number which also made it unusable. so the apps are just more of same the kraptastic software that plagues the industry. and all of the special lighting modes rely on the apps and cannot be invoked without it.that said though, I am very happy with the lights themselves. they are high quality construction and produce a good quality of light. you can control the color temperature range through the back panel and I found the controls to be intuitive. So kudos on the lights just don't expect to be able to use any of the special modes. As far as brightness goes, for most photography uses I think they are enough. but when I used them to light a small stage for a play, they were not quite enough and I found myself wishing I had bought the higher output version. Also know that these provide a broad illumination, the barn doors are of limited value in trying to create a narrower beam. The travel case is well designed and they are highly portable. I wish that the case had allowed room to put the batteries though - must carry those separately which is a bit of a nuisance. The stands also appear well made and were pretty stable. If they would replace their software with something that actually works I'd call them pretty much perfect. but as they are now it is buyer be ware and the video demonstrating the effects is fake because you can't replicate what they show. I had especially wanted that lightning effect and was not able to use it at all despite quite a bit of effort spent.

2nd purchase as our studio needed more. VERY nice upgrade from the older RGB LED lights
Our studio's business has expanded a bit and we purchased an additional set. Our original review for the 2-pack is the same as for this 3-pack.I had been a professional photographer since 2008 and retired six years ago to focus on being as good of a father to my children as possible. That did not mean hanging up my cameras. I still use them to photograph my kids as they grew through the years.Towards the end of my photography career, I traded my bulb/umbrella setup for a RGB LED based lighting system instead, primarily for the lighter weight, more compact size, and battery portability. As a bonus, I liked the ability to control the lights via a Bluetooth-connected smartphone app without having to interrupt my shoots with the infant/toddler kids.RGB LED lights allow you to simulate and color-correct certain lighting conditions. From cool daylight (5600 Kelvin) to warm sunsets (3200K) and control over the intensity, hue, and saturation of the lights, the variety of scenes you could use this light kit with is quite open ended. The trick, as always with photography or videography, is to understand how light works and to use that to your advantage. The GVM 1200D is a very nice upgrade over its predecessor with over 3.5x the number of RGB LEDs, providing more consistent, smooth control of the intensity, color, hue/saturation of the produced light. A built-in diffuser helps cast softer shadows and make skin look more flattering on the subjects.Like its older model, the lights can be set as Master and Slaves so all the lights can be controlled together through the Bluetooth-connected "GVM LED" app (available on both iOS and Android). It also has the same amount of "lighting scenes" (8) that are activated through the app, though their use cases are limited to special occasions. The new, red-colored coating of the aluminum frame makes it stand out (compared to the black of its predecessor), and that could potentially cause a small, red color cast on the subject in certain shooting situations. I would have preferred that GVM kept everything black, but this is just a minor concern.60W AC adapters power the lights, while the LEDs themselves are rated to output 50W (up from 40W of previous models). They can also be battery operated with Sony F750/970 batteries (not included) for on-location shoots anywhere outside for that perfect, low-light shot or video footage. Brightness, according to GVM, is rated at 22,000 lux at 0.5m (1.6') or 7,300 lux at 1m (3.3'). What does that mean? Lux is the intensity of light at a specific location away from the source. The farther away you travel, the lower the Lux rating, whereas the Lumen (light intensity) remains unchanged. In other words, these lights produce an intense amount of luminosity that can produce enough to fill an entire room. The lights' panels direct where the light should go and also help minimize spill onto the surrounding.Impressive still is the lifetime warranty with a 3-year, full refund guarantee. That is just unheard of and shows that the company had been standing behind its products (and why I had been a fan of GVM for years.)The light stands fold relatively compact and are quick to deploy. The light frames can be mounted to the stands in two ways to accommodate different lighting angles. When you finish a shoot, be sure you always turn off the lights. You do not want to leave them on and accidentally cause a fire.
