Q: Whats the difference between the large and smal kits? Which should I use for a guitar?

I have used the large kit for an acoustic guitar and the small kit for a mandolin and both have worked great for me.

Q: What does this actually come with? large photo shows two double-sided sleeves and four packets, but the description only mentions half as much.

Mine came with 2 double-sided sleeves and 4 packs.

Q: How do they work for instruments that hand and are not stored in the case?

I wouldn’t recommend using it without a case. I would use something like an Oasis guitar humidifier, but they are only for dry environments. It’s preferable to have a dedicated space that is environmentally controlled for wet and dry conditions. I started keeping my instruments in their cases now.

Q: For an acoustic guitar in a hard case, would i put in one pack at a time? two? four? why two sleeves?

I have a pre-war Martin and put in 2 packs in the sleeves hanging from the strings over the sound hole. Also, purchase a small hydrometer to keep an eye on the interior humidity. A lot depends on how well your case seals when closed, but the packs are wonderful.
