Yes, you can take it out of the base. It's about the width of a candle so it may fit in a candelabra

To answer your question, the base is not very sturdy. I leave them on the table once a week for the sabbath. If you just leave them there, and don't touch them, they do just fine. Should they fall, at least you're not going to start a fire. Feinstein n Associates were great. Smooth transaction, delivery in a timely fashion and follow up. I was impressed by their integrity for such a small item as this.
