An amazing prequel & sequel….. get this made into a movie
If like me, you really rate HEAT the movie, you will not be disappointed with this novel. I was wary at first as I have HEAT in my top 3 movies of all time and often watch it again & again. This movie was truly lightening in a bottle with an epic cast, and fantastic storytelling & cinematography. This book will not disappoint you, the storyline spans before & after the original bank heist and puts more meat on the bones of the main characters, you can visualise De Nero/Pacino & Kilmer as you read the text…. Pretty epic….. now my imagination turns to how this will be bought to the screen and who will be cast in the roles. If you liked HEAT you will love this……….

I've been waiting for this book
When I read the prologue, I feared it may be a lift and shift of the film. As much as I love the film, I haven't waited over 25 years to read a rehash of the script. Fear not, it was a good book with the best character being Chris Shiherlis. While I saw him as Val Kilmer the character existed on the page and in my mind. His new life in Paraguay and return to LA was riveting and I'm glad he didn't have a 1:1 with Vincent Hanna. Pacino as Lt Hanna and De Niro as the master thief Neil McCauley gave such epic performances, it's hard for the book versions to measure up. Overall, I preferred Hanna on the page but Neil's action scenes are superb. The book has Michael Mann's love of detail and character authenticity. I listened to podcast reviews of the book with the co-author Meg Gardiner and liked what I heard. I don't know who wrote what but well done for creating the female characters who are strong and believable and the showdown with Otis Wardell is fantastic. A character guide at the front would have been good as I sometimes forgot who characters were. Good to see Nate back too. I doubt I would read it again though. Is it my age or the quality of the book?

wow, a heart pounding sequel
What can I say, Michael Mann at his best. The chase scenes were some of the most intense, heart pounding exciting pages of a book I’ve read in a long time, bravo

Worth persisting with
This is a rolling epic novel that spans several scenes, cities and years. It takes a while for all the strands to come together but it's great when they do.

Nostalgic but left me feeling disappointed
I’d been looking forward to this for years. I couldn’t wait to read more about the run up to Heat and the time after. But I have to admit, I didn’t enjoy it like I thought I would. Not to say it wasn’t written well, but I think it could’ve been done better as two separate books, instead of jumping back and forth. I loved the Wardell story - nasty guy - and Hanna hunting him was a definite highlight. But if you’re here for Neil, it’s going to leave you disappointed. I’m sure there’s a follow up coming, but it needs to be better.
