Q: How close together [or far apart] are the color changes?

Lion Landscapes's color changes occur each 2-4 yards or maybe a little longer or shorter than that depending on the color way. Unlike other multi-color yarns where the color changes are inches apart, this yarn paces the color changes over a slower changing rate. You will see clearer blocks/strips/stripes of color than you would with the traditional multi-color yarns, and softer, subtler color changing from color than you would from incorporating stripes into your work by changing yarns directly. Q: I make chemo hats for kids and use Red Heart With Love - is this yarn soft and not abrasive?

Extremely soft! I've made three shawls from the Landscape yarns as gifts. Extremely soft and cozy. I would not hesitate to use this yarn for kids chemo hats.

You've got to know there's no answer for that. Are the cardboard letters one inch high or a meter? That makes a huge difference. How tight you wrap the yarn makes a difference too. There is no good way to say for sure except to do it. Each person will wrap with a different tension, will leave a different spacing between rows of yarn.
