amazing series of two for the price of one
amazing series of two for the price of one.these guys were way ahead of their time.the british miles davis. ian carr assembles top groups of musicians, doing a rock / jazz mix.' fusion' is not the word: these are real compositions withspace to solo: but solid. maybe one day the live versions will come out.especially of Labyrinth!Ps: Other good reviews. One guy had the tremendous advantage of seeing Labyrinth live. !! Another also had the tremendous advantage of reading the Greek classic. That would be myself 😊. Helps understand. Also King Crimson Sailors Tale / Formentera Lady. Also some Soft Machine's Chloë and the Pirates: Culcha, mon. Just picked up Nucleus: Bracknell Sunshine. Has reminiscences - and has an easier groove.

Contrasts- both good
Roots grooves along quite nicely and, of the two, is less thoughtful and generally fun to listen to. Labyrinth, on the other hand, is a bit more experimental. However, there are sections of brilliance that make it well worth the effort required to get through the "noodling" parts. Driving rhythms hold everything together. Labyrinth is more more jazz/rock/opera/symphony fusion. Norma Winstone's soaring vocals are fantastic. So, I'm not totally of the opposite view to OutRider, but certainly a lot more positive about Labyrinth. Full disclosure - Labyrinth was my first exposure to Nucleus, live, in Liverpool in the 70s, so this may bias me somewhat.Ian Carr's talent as a musician is sorely missed

Great and not so great
"Roots" is a really solid, British 70's Fusion album and well worth buying. Great musicianship and very playable. "Labyrinth" on the other hand is hard work. It has some truly great moments but they are sandwiched between passages of experimental nonsense. The sleeve notes actually quote Ian Carr as being apologetic for the compositional failings. Not a good sign but it shows he has integrity. I suspect that these two albums represent the best and the worst of Nucleus. (Just a hunch.) I'm sure there is someone out there who will suggest that I've got it all the wrong way around but what can you do.
