Visually classic and stunning with an excellent cast. Romantic and beautiful with so much heart. Highly recommended even if you aren't big on foreign films.

I first saw this film via Netflix streaming last year and loved it. I often suggest it to others, and came to the conclusion I should own it. After searching online, I discovered some issues. One being that there are two separate versions, cut (for American audiences) and uncut / special edition (apparently for the rest of the world...who have eyes and minds that can tolerate a visual portrayal of the nude human form). Of course I wanted the latter, not only because Monica Bellucci is easily one of the most beautiful women in the history of forever and ever...but also because I despise an artist's creation being hacked and slashed due to a vocal minority of insecure 'potential' viewers. Censorship of artistic expression is shameful, unless it breaks the law in some way. The second issue I found was that as an American the only Blu-ray option I had was the cut / censored version. Because of this I opted to search for the uncensored 2-Disc DVD set from Korea, which I'd found through research was supposedly Region zero and would play on Region 1 (United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories) players. I contacted the Amazon merchant "Import CD's" out of California concerning the region issue and they provided me with all they had, which was not much more than Amazon had.I went ahead with the order through Import CD's as I've dealt with them in the past. Shipping was very prompt and the merchandise was in fine quality when received. The back of the case stated region 3, so I used Wikipedia to find any more information and noticed that region 3 should NOT play in region 1 players. I took a chance anyway, noting both the information from Import CD's and Amazon's website, as well as user reviews acknowledging the Korean version as the one to buy. I was pleased to find that it indeed does work on a US Playstation 3, however the 2nd disc (special features) would not load. Just a continuous clicking as the system continued the attempt. I tried the disc in my PC. GOM Player would not load it, but VLC did load the menu and managed to play through roughly 5 minutes of the first "making of" before stalling and not allowing any more playback, even after multiple attempts at different menu selections. This is not a huge deal for me as I got the movie at a reasonable price and the actual movie was all I really wanted anyway. I'll check YouTube, etc. to see if I can find special feature items at some later time.Overall the movie quality is great (other than the first minute or two, in which video quality does suffer from lack of clarity a bit) for a DVD being up-converted on a PS3. The picture is 2.35:1 Anamorphic widescreen and the disc is single layer, NTSC. Audio was fine (the movie includes a great soundtrack!), with both Dolby Digital 2.0/DTS and Dolby 5.1 surround as options. If you're new to this movie, do understand that it is a foreign film (Italian) without English dialogue, so you'll have to opt for English or Korean subtitles with the Italian spoken dialogue. I found that the subtitles did not really detract from my enjoyment of the film at all...and once you've seen the film you'll be watching it again anyway, so you'll have plenty of time to see it all. The packaging reads mainly in English on the cover and binding, however the film description on the back is only Korean.In summary, if you love this film buy this Korean 2-Disc version (Barcode # 8 809154 130234)...unless a Blu-ray uncut special edition for your region is announced, in which case that is a must buy over this!. If you're on the fence and a Netflix subscriber, I suggest streaming it now, or rent it wherever you can find it...either version. You won't regret it. This is a fantastic coming of age film with wonderful acting and great atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Great movie.

This was one of those that you can't read many (negative) reviews on and you almost have to watch it without reading reviews. Reason being, the first review I read mentioned "in the first 15 minutes it was all about sex and inappropriate scenes with a young man".I had to look at this where the location was, era, what was happening at that time. The woman had to eat. What would you or I do in a similar situation...I am not picking on any particular review, Lord knows I do not want excessive nudity/porn or any kind lewd behavior to be the norm, I just think this was not over the top. I Really enjoyed this movie.I would almost bet you this was a close realization on how it really was in that era. Especially with all the old bittys running around pointing fingers at everyone else but their own husbands! I think those husbands got exactly who they deserve!If I'm honest ,My friends and I at that age were probably worse than Renato and his his friends!

Great movie

This movie was a little unusual but I liked it.

The main actress is very beautiful..obviously the advertisements hinted at that being a running theme but had I known the rest, I would not have rented this. 15 minutes into this movie I wondered how long this boys puberty and how many terrible the inappropriate scenes regarding this would be. I did not realize the perspective would be from adolescent male coming of age and the whole" sex sells" would be including such gross imagery and concepts. Yeah males going through puberty is real no need to encourage age inappropriate scenes.. you can tell the story with out that...and yeah, he told a story of the times which those parts were ok but there were SEVERAL inappropriate scenes where an adult woman is kissing and luring this 13teen something boy and nude..encouraging thoughts of its normalcy when there are may different ways this movie could have been directed and told the same story without pedophilic scenes. Its its past the 2000's.. not cool anymore- let's all show that we have evolved from the unconscious tree of life shall we. *barf sounds*

Monica shows an entire range of her acting from seductress to being beatened and bruized as a collaborator wit Mousolino after the fall of Rome.

l movimento regolare di Monica Bellucci in una passeggiata siciliana detta i tempi dell’ultimo film di Giuseppe Tornatore, Malèna; ed è già un movimento cinematografico, che si offre allo spettatore con l’ovvietà dei più lirici luoghi comuni frequentati dal regista di Nuovo Cinema Paradiso: come il Truffaut della celebre battuta sulle gambe delle donne (“sono i compassi che misurano il mondo”) che qui si mette in scena, un passo dopo l’altro. Se La leggenda del pianista sull’oceano segnava il punto d’implosione di un linguaggio ipertrofico, sovraccarico di immagini leziose e di cattiva letteratura, Malèna vorrebbe aprire la fase interlocutoria di un regista cresciuto all’ombra del cinema come Arte, del quale si è autoproclamato erede ed interprete (guardando ieri a Fellini, oggi a Germi). E’ un cinema egocentrico (ed euro-centrico) che confeziona prodotti in stile internazionale, concordati con l’investitore Miramax (distributore di La vita è bella negli USA); e sono sufficienti pochi elementi narrativi e stilistici per collocare il prodotto Malèna nella categoria dei film su commissione, realizzati per compiacere un pubblico che ha mostrato di gradire un certo tipo di immaginario: la suggestione del genere storico, l’Italia della seconda guerra mondiale con il suo folclore (quello popolare e quello fascista), la funzione salvifica degli Americani. Dall’universo del Pianista emerge ancora una volta un racconto di formazione condotto da un punto di vista assoluto, quello di un ragazzino di tredici anni, Renato: irretito dal fascino, dall’incanto della bellezza femminile (che per lui s’incarna tutta in Malèna-Bellucci), Renato registra la parabola di questa creatura indecifrabile, orgogliosa e fragile, indomita e vinta dalle avversità. Circondata dal “machismo” come unica manifestazione del carattere virile (esemplare – e per questo inutilmente didascalica, e artificiosa – la scena in cui al bar del paese una quantità di uomini si contende l’accensione della sua sigaretta), ella sperimenta pure la condizione di isolamento cui la costringono le donne come forza conservatrice, come gruppo sociale che custodisce le regole e le convenzioni. In un mondo così disegnato, a Malèna resta solo da camminare; e lo spettatore non può che seguirla con gli occhi di Renato, in un’identificazione che lo precipita in uno spazio angusto e insieme vastissimo.Le linee di forza che organizzano la visione del film sono di ordine duplice; da una parte riguardano il punto di vista, dall’altra l’aspetto metatestuale, ossia il dichiararsi del film come testo interagito da autore e spettatore.Al punto di vista del ragazzino sono associate delle immagini soggettive, prodotte dallo sguardo del personaggio; in questa categoria di sguardi rientrano le soggettive “analitiche”, nelle quali vediamo all’opera un punto di vista reale, che registra gli oggetti e i fatti (si hanno, per esempio, quando Renato spia Malèna da una fessura del tetto); ci sono poi le semi-soggettive, in cui la ripresa comprende dettagli, primi piani, movimenti di macchina, che non riflettono direttamente lo sguardo di Renato ma sono comunque “dipendenti” da quello; infine abbiamo le soggettive “interiori”, immagini mentali che risultano da sogni o da desideri (queste si hanno quando Renato si proietta al fianco di Malèna, o la vede improvvisamente nuda anche quando è vestita). Nei primi due tipi di soggettiva converge evidentemente tutta la strategia narrativa e insieme la potenzialità espressiva del film: la sua capacità di gestire minuziosamente i movimenti all’interno del quadro, di dirigerli, di crearli a partire da un’intenzione creativa; queste immagini fanno capire che la folla intorno a Malèna è lì in funzione della macchina da presa. Come spesso accade a Tornatore (i cui vezzi stilistici nel <Pianista> sfioravano la mania), questo apparato formale si traduce in un freddo e manierato omaggio alla bella fotografia, o alla bella pittura: la composizione dell’ultima inquadratura, con i gruppi ben ordinati di schiena alla macchina da presa che procedono verso il destino (già scritto dalla voce narrante), è quanto di più rigidamente fotografico il regista siciliano ci abbia finora mostrato, e in generale si nota una predilezione per la “veduta”, specialmente nelle location marocchine (il film è stato girato parzialmente in Marocco per una serie di vicissitudini della produzione in Italia). Sono invece le immagini interiori ad aprire nel testo quella crepa nella quale il regista finisce per franare miseramente con tutto il suo repertorio poetico; queste “soggettive al quadrato” del ragazzino che sogna Malèna in forma cinematografica (di volta in volta lei e lui sono i protagonisti di Tarzan, Ombre rosse, Jane Eyre) introducono un livello ulteriore di finzione che proprio non riesce a trovare posto su uno schermo già gremito di immagini autoreferenziali. La loro debolezza, giova sottolinearlo, è meno nello sconfinamento nel grottesco e nel greve che nell’assoluta gratuità e arbitrarietà con cui si danno allo spettatore. Non serve che a ricucire il senso concorrano le metafore ossessive dello sguardo (inquadrature dell’occhio, della finestra, del buco della serratura, dello specchio): il senso è perduto, e ci si ritrova con una cocciuta legittimazione dell’enunciato raggiunta mediante un sistema di corrispondenze fra regista come Autore ed Enunciatore, personaggio-bambino come medium, e spettatore come Enunciatario. Le analogie scoperte fra il dispositivo cinematografico e il personaggio di Renato si possono elencare a partire dalla prossimità fra l’occhio del ragazzino e l’occhio della macchina da presa; fra il suo carattere dinamico ed esuberante e il sistema dei movimenti di macchina (l’arrampicata sull’albero equivale a un dolly; la corsa in bicicletta ad un carrello); fra gli episodi di onanismo (che hanno ancora il potere di scandalizzare i commentatori di Famiglia cristiana!) e la naturale disposizione del cinema di Tornatore all’autoerotismo.A darci una misura definitiva dello stato delle cose è una sequenza rivelatrice, quella in cui Renato viene condotto dal padre al bordello perché sia iniziato al sesso: ignorando per un attimo gli elementi più superficiali della connotazione (luce rossa, percezione distorta, montaggio frammentato), e prestando attenzione al movimento avvolgente dei corpi intorno al soggetto che li guarda e li sceglie, si capisce come il regista-bambino si senta attualmente accerchiato dalle seduzioni facili del linguaggio (quegli artifici che lo hanno quasi ipnotizzato nel Pianista, per intenderci), e intenda fronteggiarle attraverso una scelta affettiva, viscerale. Nel film, Renato guarda (e sceglie) la prostituta che non partecipa al turpe balletto, che è poi la più somigliante a Malèna; così Tornatore fugge dalle sollecitazioni che il tracollo formale del Pianista gli metteva di fronte, trovando riparo nel ripiegamento eclettico-nostalgico, il solo atteggiamento che sa opporre al cinema di oggi.Versione blu-ray notevole..ne consiglio pienamente l'acquisto .

Un très bon film où on passe un bon moment

I think it's my favourite Italian movie I've ever seen and I honestly prefer it to Cinema Paradiso. I'm not gonna review the movie because it's a classic but I'll say this is an unrated version with extra 16 minutes of nudity that I haven't seen before and my oh my... I wish I'd seen it when I was a kid. Any other version sold in Europe is cut which defies the purpose. Also, Imprint releases are amazing. Not only they have new extra features but the artwork is stunning and always different on the rigit slipcover than on the insert cover. 4k transfer is very sharp and clean. The colours in this movie are very warm. The music of Ennio Morricone is beautiful and changes according to the scenes. It can emphasize funny scenes and then it goes back to this romantic nostalgic theme. Absolutely stunning release of an underrated classic and a must-have for Monica Belucci fans.
