Doctor Who: The New Series: The Diary of River Song

Big Finish does it again with this high-quality, very enjoyable audio drama. To be upfront, I am NOT -- WAS not -- a River Song fan. This box set changed that. One wonders how very enjoyable it will be to those who are already fans of the character! (This was a selling point for me -- Big Finish has done excellent things with the 6th and 8th Doctors, so I figured I'd give them a try to convince me. Wow, did they ever!) There are four interlinked stories in the box set, not all of which feature the Doctor as is "hinted at" on the cover of the set. All stories flow well, all characters are well-acted, and the sound quality is wonderful -- all as expected for a Big Finish production. I had favorites of the bunch, but must say I found the third adventure, Signs, particularly intriguing. However, one really MUST listen to the stories in order for full enjoyment, I believe. My only regret was that I had to tear the slipcase as the discs were packed so very tightly, but this is definitely a set worth the price, and one I will be listening to again at some point!

The audio adventures of River Song has just begun, and it's a tremendous beginning. This first series consists of four stories not exactly from River's diary (although I'm sure they are later written in it after the events unfold), but the diary itself is vital to the plot. I love River's character, and Alex Kingston's performance shined especially on audio recording. I usually end up buying anything that's River Song included, but I was really looking forward to the combination of Alex Kingston and Paul McGann recording together.I like to read the writer's notes before diving into the audio of each CD, but what had me initially confused was Matt Fitton's ("The Rulers of the Universe") explanation that River "knows their [the Doctor and River's] shared history can only begin with his Tenth incarnation..." which is something she has not experienced yet (being still alive and all) so how can she know this? The only reasonable explanation that I can think of is that she was told, perhaps accidentally by the Doctor or by stories she heard similar to her situation on Darillium in "The Husbands of River Song". I'm looking forward to future (or is it past) interactions between the Eighth Doctor and River in Doom Coalition 2.In THE BOUNDLESS SEA, River has to stop a zombie apocalypse (sort of) in the early 20th century; in I WENT TO A MARVELOUS PARTY, River tries to solve a murder mystery while trapped on a spaceship with a bunch of megalomaniacs; in SIGNS, River joins up with her husband, Mr. Song, in trying to stop some planet-killing ships; and in THE RULERS OF THE UNIVERSE, River aids the Eighth Doctor in facing off against the original owners of the planet-killing ships as well as the megalomaniacs who orchestrated most of these events.I feel like there are still some holes left in the story, such as the origin of Bertie Potts, but I suspect we'll be able to explore those more when series 2 comes out. Overall, this series is a must have for all fans of Doctor Who.

This is a set of three radio plays centered around River Song, a character from Doctor Who. Why the autogenerated review questions imply it's an audiobook is beyond me.Well produced, well acted, very engrossing. I am a River fan, so am very partial, but I will listen to more of the Big Finish works based on this set. The depth of sound and effect is stunning.

I'm without words on how to review this other than I absolutely loved it, and find it one of the best Audio books I have listened to. River was spot on River, and it was so good to follow her with another adventure. I've been wanting River to meet the Eighth Doctor for so long, and I never thought they'd do it, but here it happened and it was perfect, and I was so happy they met! Can't wait to listen to the next River Song adventure from Big Finish.

This audio spin-off from the Doctor Who series begins blandly, but gains depth and interest over the course of the four episodes. The series plays like old-style radio theater, with minimal sound effects and much left to the listener's imagination. Little would make sense here for listeners not already steeped in the Doctor's universe. Fans of River Song will enjoy another glimpse of her operating on her own, as well as the return of the Eighth Doctor. Plot twists don't match the best of the televised episodes, but the "Diary of River Song" does provide some surprises.

Honestly. It was really great! I am a big fan of River Song so I was very excited about this purchase.River Song is perfect in this series. She is at her best here without the Doctor, which was bound to happen once her character was created, she holds herself high in all her high heels and emotional depth, in these stories, it explores the character’s depth of her morals of what was missing in the TV series, which made the angle of the decisions more interesting in play.Overall it’s worth getting the audio set, but I’m not giving it full stars because some of the characters in the stories weren’t as strong or memorable in evolving much of plots if it weren’t for River. Like they are there but you wont have the need of acknowledgement to hold them long to not forget them.

Very good stories, but if she isn't with the Dr., most of the beings she is surrounded by are a bit boring and dull which takes away from her sparkle.

I am a big fan of Dr. Who. I have like a lot of the companions that they have had since session 1. River has turned into the #1 or 2 of the lot. These Audio stories center on her, not the Doctor. So if you are looking for a Doctor and River story, this is not it. This is pure River. And I really like it.

Bought this for my husband who is a fan and has loved listening to it, good quality and value for money, would recommend a listen.

A welcome return for the irrepressible River Song. At times funny, dangerous and heartbreaking, this series is a delight for all River and Doctor Who fans.

Die Partiegäste werden von Robotern bedient und als sie von einem dieser Roboter einen Champagner bekommt, wird River von diesem um Hilfe gebeten. Doch bevor sie dieser Sache nachgehen kann, wird sie einigen wichtigen Gästen vorgestellt, die sich selbst als „Ruler of the Universe“ sehen, zu denen auch die anderen ständigen Partiegäste zu gehören scheinen. Denn außer feiern, gehen sie an Bord dieses Schiffs noch einer wesentlich tief greifenderenden und weitreichenderenden Tätigkeit nach.Könnte diese Tätigkeit der Grund dafür sein, dass River wenig später in der Nähe des hilfesuchenden Roboters eine Leiche findet? Um dann kurz darauf selbst fast das Zeitliche zu segnen?Eine SF-Miss-Marple auf einem Kreuzfahrtschiff. Nun ist sie in einem Rennen gegen die Zeit um herauszubekommen, wo diese Schiffe herkommen, was sie wollen und wie man sie an weiteren Auslöschungen hindert – und das alles unter Medikamenten, die ihre Leben aufrecht erhalten, aber ihren Geist irritieren. Und die irritierende Gegenwart ihres wenig hilfreichen „Ehemanns“ ist auch nicht besonders nützlich. Und das erstaunt sie doch sehr.Eine Episode, die alles bisher in dieser Geschichte Geschehene in Frage stellt.The Rulers of the Universe (Matt Fitton)Nach den Ereignissen in der vorhergehenden Episode, hat sich River Song für die „Ruler“ als unzu-reichend erwiesen, weswegen sie auch noch eine weitere Person auf ihr Schiff einladen. Eine frühere Inkarnation des Doctors, denn von der Anwesenheit eines Zeitherren versprechen sie sich eine Lösung ihrer Probleme.Doch River hält nichts von der Idee, diese Probleme zu lösen, denn diese Lösungen stellen für viele Milliarden Lebewesen noch größere Probleme dar, weswegen sie beginnt intensiv – und nur über Funk – mit dem Doctor zusammenzuarbeiten, der in dieser Inkarnation ihr besser nicht begegnen – ja, nicht einmal von ihrer wahren Identität wissen – sollte.Interessante letzte Episode dieser Box, auf die noch ein paar andere folgen werden.Wie gewohnt erfahren wir in den Extras, wie die einzelnen Darstellerinnen und Darsteller zu diesem Projekt gekommen sind und wie die Skripte entwickelt wurden. Ist nett, wenn auch nicht unbedingt notwendig.

lots of fun. left me wanting more. don't understand the bit about why River has to hide her identity from Doc 7(?). But I enjoyed the assertive, smart, witty, confident and sexy River.
