Brings Roman History Alive
This is an excellent historical fiction book about the late Roman Empire in Britain. The book covers the period of 305-306 AD with a brief prologue covering a battle in the Eastern Roman Empire in 298 AD when the hero of the book got first recognized for his efforts. The book is about a hypothetical event, with some historical context, that occurred between the Romans and the barbarian (Scottish) Picts. The Picts lose their king, to potential murder, and new king is being voted on, and the Romans send a small delegation as a support with a Roman unit (century) of less than 100 men joining it.From there, the book moves fast in its progress. Events occur, which I won't share because I don't ruin the book for you and the hero (Aurelius Castus) is right in the middle of all of these major events. The book also covers some historical figures in the telling of its story, specifically Constantine, before he becomes emperor of Rome, and his father Constantius. All of the characters are well developed. The story is also well told with a strong historical context - the author did his research, which he shares some of at the end of the book. This is a well written book, well worth the read for anyone interested in Roman history. It brings Roman history alive as all good historical fiction, and the reason that I really enjoy these books.

The characters are very real--both men and women. The action is believable. The grammar and sentence structure does not interfere with the flow of the story/
