Hello, in the "special features" section, it says microwave safe but if you go down a tad bit it also says in the "about this item" that it isn't microwave safe. If it's making a weird smell in the microwave, I just wouldn't put it in there anymore. Boil water or use another mug to get the water and pour it into this awesome nightmare before christmas mug. I hope this helps
