Q: How do you turn the laptop on if it’s off and in the dock?

when you mac is connected to an external monitor. mouse, and a keyboard, it would turn in when you press keyboard or mouse button

Q: Does it work with a hard shell case? I travel a lot with my MacBook so its always in a hard case.

No - it is quite svelte and fits the MBA very snugly. This is good because it means your max won’t wiggle or become loose and lose the connection. I’m looking at mine here beside me and I can say there’s no way it would fit with a shell case - sorry! Otherwise, a great product. Works exactly as you’d hope.
