The tubes are not reused. Portland Bee Balm belongs to a program that can recycle small plastics so if you return the tubes to them, they can send them on for recycling.

would the manufacturer address my concern that the olive oil in it might go rancid?

There is an expiration date on the product - mine has always arrived with at least a year, if not more, before the expiration date. The beeswax helps preserve the olive oil so it will stay fresh until well after the expiration date. I received Reviva's lip conditioner with absolutely zero expiration date and it looked like it was years old. That's why I stopped using it. I buy the 3 pack Portland bee balm and it takes me a year to a year and a half to use up all 3 tubes. The last one is just as fresh as the first. Does that answer your question?
