The Revenge of Gaia: Why the Earth is Fighting Back and How We Can Stil

A master work, nicely published
A masterpiece, nicely published with attractive print. Good to handle for a cheap paperback, highly recommended! This is one of Lovelock’s best, self-critical and composed at a fine level of intellectual rigour. A joy to read, though a very strident warning. It fills the onlooker with mixed sadness, anger and a desire to act. Near to perfection.

A good
James E Lovelock opened up new avenues of thinking for my partner and I. We discuss the nuances of the book (and other books of JEL) on a day to day basis. A good buy

The Revenge of Gaia: Why the Earth is Fighting Back and How We Can Still...

essential reading
It's difficult not to confuse a book review with a political debate on the environment - I'll try but I'm sure I'll fail like some of the rest. This is the first Lovelock book I've read and I can sincerely say that I found it well-written, clear, intelligent, reasonably argued, fully referenced, and includes many pointers to further reading. I was shocked and surprised by some of his words but never confused by them.In the book he puts the case for Gaia, the Earth as a self-regulating system for mutually beneficial climate control. He then gives evidence why he believes the climate is changing, potentially irreversibly, to a hostile environment for much of existing life, mainly due to man's industrial impact. This book is now a few years old and most of this is already accepted, corroborated by the vast majority of the scientific world and governments everywhere. Even so, it's good to read the explanation unequivocally from one of the originators of Gaia theory.Further in the book he explains why he believes certain green ideologies are wrong. He does this scientifically and reasonably. If you're a green then I hope you can hold the two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still function. More than this section of the book needs to be read it needs to be understood. There is nothing in the way this book is written and how the arguments are presented that makes it deserving of less than four stars. If we disagree with his arguments that's our right, but please don't lets dissuade others from making their own judgements by inducing or feeding prejudice. People should be reading Lovelock, amongst other important writers on the subject, and be fully informed in order to make an informed stand on which way to solve our global problems one way or the other.Essential reading for everyone.
