Excellent
It’s been something that I’ve wanted since it first came out since I was in my early twenties. Once I saw this again, it brought out the kid in me. I had to get it. Better late than never.

Excellent insights into maybe the best drummer ever
Wow! This 2-disc set will grab you and won't let you go. I received mine on a Saturday and I had some errands to run. The mailman came just as I was leaving, so I cranked open the box and there it was... laying there... like a bomb waiting to go off. I thought to myself, "Well, I'll just put it in and sample it a bit before I go."Almost 3 hours later, I looked at the clock and went "Holy criminy! I gotta get goin'!"I'm not a drummer, but I've always been a fan of Buddy Rich from watching him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Neil Peart does just an excellent job of narrating the approach to the project and the contributions of all the great drummers you will see and hear on these discs. It is an insight into how the drummer can drive the band. As the producer of this project (along with Buddy's daughter), Peart has dictated camera angles and mic placements to show off the drummer's technique and strong points, his equipment, and his style of attack in creating his signature sound. I must admit I was sort of stunned that first time through. These two DVD's easily comprise one of the richest musical experiences I've ever had and there have been many.Buddy Rich's Big Band really puts the punch and steam into the melody behind these dynamite beats as laid down by the boys on the sticks. The beautiful thing happening here is that each drummer gets to interpret one of Buddy's songs (or one of their own choosing) and Buddy's playing using their own technique. They bring their own personality and style as part of their contribution to the project. The courtesy and respect that each drummer and the band exchange between themselves is a joy to witness.Basically it breaks down into 4 segments - 2 segments on each disc. Each segment consists of several drummers doing their songs - these include narration prior to the cut by Peart who is an excellent professor and teacher in his role - and this is followed by a Buddy Rich exhibition. Just when you think you've seen some of the best drumming you've ever witnessed in your life as far as Big Band music is concerned... along comes Buddy's piece and he proceeds to blow your doors off... Big Time. There are far too many highlights to mention here, and you are sure to find those little gems that you will love more than I did. With the various tempos and approaches you see and hear here, you can't help but find several you love.If you are a drummer, you will be provided some pointed insights into your craft. These 2 discs are a marvelous exposition of what the drums as an instrument are capable of -- many rich and varied textures and styles of play shown here.As for you Gearheads.... get ready for some sweet set-ups. I saw some parts of drum kits I'd never ever seen before. WARNING! You are gonna want some of what you are going to see!If you like Big Band music or if you're a fan of drums, this is a Must Have for your collection. In my estimation, worth far more than what the price commands. After viewing these 2 discs, you will come away with a deeper appreciation of your favorite drummers regardless of what kind of music they play... and isn't that worth quite a bit when something makes your old, familiar music new again?

RIP NEIL! THE PROFESSOR SHARES HIS KNOWLEDGE, AND SO MUCH MORE!
i'm not a drummer (Air Drumming only), but am fractionated by RUSH, and Neil makes concepts clear, explains the differences between Rock Drum methods and Jazz, again, out of my comfort zone, but curious to break into the Jazz language. This video tutorial gets alot of translation for both genres to enjoy the other. Again RIP Neil Peart (:-}

Great to see the BR band
Great to see the BR band. But. when you, I, have seen "the Man" in person many times, these rock drummers just don't fill the role. Onetime, at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, with the team bus parked in front showing destination: "Outer Space", Buddyfinishes the closing number. It was either Channnel One Suite or West Side Story. He gets the towel to wipe the persperation, because, ofcourse, he finished with both hands a blur. I'm sitting first table dead center with my wife. As Rich is wiping his brow, my brilliant wife says: why don't you take off your shirt. We were no youngsters at the time and I know my wife, she did not mean anything spuriousabout it. Instantanteously, I'm thinking, this man is the consummate pro at dealing with jackasses in his audience for decades. Withoutmissing a wipe, he looks down at my wife, while I wanted to crawl under the table and says:Why don't you take off your dress?"

Amazing sessions!
Must have for all jazz or session drummers, super-entertaining, even though it's 20-years old, What was very surprising to see and hear was that the "lesser known" gods of drumming in the 90's were the ones who killed it on this session: Simon Phillips, Kenny Aronoff, and Manu Katchu. Worth getting just for their sessions alone! BUT it really shows just how Buddy was/is/always will be the KING of drumming, in every category. His musical feel remains unrivaled, even today in the age of Keith Carlock,Tommy Igoe, or even Antonio Sanchez. And ALL of these guys said the same thing. They get it. Even the producer Neil Peart was humbled (and he tried his darndest to play jazz, but just ain't got no swing, sorry to say, but he's still a pioneer in rock drumming).

Music great - Vid not so much
Simply put, I prefer the CDs of the music. The video quality and dated look leaves me wanting to not watch. Sometimes eating sausage is ok as long as you don't see it being made.

Burning For Buddy
How do you begin to describe the GREAT BUDDY RICH? What drummer hasn't been affected by Mr. Rich's thunderous snare drum roll. Neil Peart's and Cathy Rich's efforts in getting the great drummer's on the DVD in nothing but awarding!!! It's nice seeing "rock" drummers come to express their awe for one of the Jazz Greats!Mr. Dave Weckl's Mercy, Mercy Mercy was funky. Mr. Omar Hakim was great as usual. And the others keep me up at night reviewing the DVD over and over. It's refreshing to see the combination of veteran drummers like Joe Morello and newer drummers like Marvin "Smitty" Smith and Manu Katche. A must have for all drummers.

Amazing. Period.
This DVD is an amazing experience, both to the artists who participated and the viewers. It's an exemple on how to preserve the memories and culture, paying a tribute to the great artists. I would love if we have something like this in Brazil, regarding the former musicians who helped to consolidate the Brazilian music. And as I'm talking about Brazi, I could say Buddy Rich is the "Pelé" of drums. Neil Peart, Joe Morello, Bill Bruford, Omar Hakim, Kenny Aronoff and a lot of the most talented drummers made a unforgetable work to honor this genius. Every drummer must watch this DVD, to see where we came from and where we're going.

Drummer Fest!
I don't really want to add to the comprehensive reviews already here, but I'll throw in a few thoughts!I bought it for my 88 year old Dad! We're both ex drummers and we've both seen him live on more than one occasion. I've even visited his grave twice on pilgrimages to the (unmarked) grave of my all time hero, Frank Zappa. It say's on Buddy's grave 'One of a kind'. There's not a drummer on this DVD would argue with that. Whatever you pay for it, it's worth it for Buddy's solo at the Concert for the Americas. One of a kind. The only one.

Brilliant Videos.
Perfect for any Drum enthusiast, a wonderful array of star drummers working with the Buddy Rich orchestra, the extras are worth the price alone. Look for the trad arrangement of AWB's classic Pick Up The Pieces, sublime!
