Fantastic Knife
This is an incredible blade and a fantastic value for experienced knife users. Unlike the current trend where every idiot has to baton huge blocks of wood, this incredible knife is designed to stay sharp for a long time and keep cutting. It has a high Rockwell value of 62 RC, which makes it much harder to sharpen the many knives. However, it is progressively tempered making the spine significantly softer. Thus making the knife a lot tougher. This is similar to the same process as Japanese Katanas are made in which the edge is significantly harder than the spine, which can take a lot of abuse. However, while the Japanese do this with their custom blades, this blade is mass produced but the exact process is rather sketchy. My blade came sharp, but not very sharp. I had to put an edge on it. We would call the style of the blade edge a "Saber Grind, or a "high scandi grind. " In either case, there was a slight Micro Bevel to the blade which necessitated my sharpening to zero grind, but then giving the slight micro grind a touch up with a strop. You cannot see or even feel the very slight micro bevel, but Your blade while still cutting, will not cut optimally unless You "tune" that slight micro bevel. This knife is not for the average purchaser, but only for very experienced users who have a lot of experience with knives, styles of blades and have outstanding sharpening skills and are looking for a high Rockwell Hardness knife, but not wanting to pay for the price of a premium Powdered Sintered Super Steel.I was shocked by the quality of the blade and how long the blade is lasting in some basic carving tasks on hard engineered wood. I carved for over an hour on hard plywood which tends to be really hard on an edge, but after one hour of carving, I tested it on a sheet of paper, and there was no need to even strop--incredible. It was just as sharp as when I started.I own a number of custom knives, and have been sharpening knives for the past 55 years (yes, I am that old) and this is the first blade that I have ever handled that I would recommend to experienced users for a field knife. You can also get these knives as a kit with only the blade and for less than one half the price if You have the skill to put together a standard knife. After using all manner of knives, I would say that the Puukko design is without question the premier knife style for a decent no nonsense field knife of either Bushcraft, Survival or Hunting purposes. It has a flat edge line similar to a Kephart, but with a medium belly for an outstanding field game dressing blade with incredible edge holding rivaling some of the Super Steels like S30V.It will certainly outperform 1095 by a long shot, also A-2, D-2, ATS 34 or its counterpart, 154CM, and a host of specialty steels. The steel is very hard, and I had to use a diamond stone, and even that was rather hard. All in all, if You are an experienced and competent user, You owe it to yourself to try this fascinating blade.
