Bythell has a gift of seeing the humor and humanity in the everyday. Through this book, he gives insight into the day-to-day routine of running a used bookstore, and makes many funny observations about the customers who visit his shop. Having worked at a used bookstore myself, I can attest to the accuracy of his descriptions. This book was recommended by a friend, and while at first I didn't have the highest hopes (I wondered how entertaining a book like this could really be) I ended up falling in love with the world that Bythell creates, and greedily seeking out the other three books he's published, which are just as good as this one. Some may find his viewpoint misanthropic, but I'd say that he just sees people perceptively, with all their eccentricities.
