Stopped working quickly and then worked again
Started making a horrible screeching noise every time they were turned on after a few hours of use. Then we left them alone for several days and then they started working again. Don't know what the problem was, but they seemed to have fixed themselves. My 5 year old wanted walkie talkies to play with in the house. These are a great option. They are cheap and work well in the house. There is a lot of static, but I didn't want to pay more for a toy. Sometimes it is hard to understand him with the static. They are rather loud, so he can't play with them after his sister goes to bed. But as with any toy, there are restrictions that parents put on them. You get what you pay for. I wanted a toy that he could play with in the house and that's what I got. I'm pleased now that they are working that way again.

Old-school is still cool.
They were cheap, they work. Not great, but good enough for kids playing around in the neighborhood. They require 2 batteries, not included. 2 times 9V batteries (one for each receiver; that is the box-shaped alkaline ones. Oh, and be sure to have a Phillips head screw driver handy as well). It has a beeping button for Morse codes that no one ever uses (but it is still cool to be able to make beeping noises). Reminded me of the same type of walkie-talkies I had as a kid. Why not? Five stars (until they break or disappoint my family otherwise). I will update if I find anything out-of-the-ordinary with these walkie-talkies.

bad out of box
one of the pair has terrible squeal on it cannot hear incoming transmission on it cause squeal is too loud. we have tried switching batteries and and where we stand to use it. just got one bad walkie talkie. i really thought that if it was coming from NERF, that it would be of pretty good quality. sad thing is, it was from Santa. so my son was just beside himself when it did not work correctly. we told him that we were going to have to send it back to the north pole so the elfs could tweak it. haven't gotten around to returning it yet though. just don't want it to be a waste of time. NERF, i am very disappointed.

Okay toy, but the static makes it less fun than it could be!
My son received this as a gift for his sixth birthday. The range is fine. We live in an apartment, and we used this as he took the trash out (a few hundred feet from our door). I could hear him well, and we talked back and forth. They seem sufficiently sturdy as well. He has thrown them around a bit, and they haven't broken. There is a lot of static, however, and that is frustrating. It makes the whole system less fun to use.Overall, I'm not impressed. I just don't remember the walkie-talkies I had growing up making that much noise. So far, these were not as much of a hit as I had hoped, but hopefully, he can have more fun with them with other kids-- I can't handle the noise!

These work really really well. My grandson went in ...
These work really really well . My grandson went in the back yard to slay the zombies attacking our house while I stayed safe in the house . When he got them all he used his walkie to let me know it was all clear and we could safely come out side . I heard him loud and clear thank goodness since we were trying to get to a safer hide out that day . The Nerf walkie talkies surely saved the day by not breaking when this panicked grand mom dropped it while fleeing from the zombies , picked it up and wow it still worked perfectly . Needless to say my brave little guy saved us and we made it to our new safe house . Havent seen a zombie since that day but Im sure they are coming back on Sunday just in time to interrupt our family get together.

10-4 Over and Out
I bought this for my 5yr old newphew. He is thrilled with it. It is so much fun to watch him and his cousin ( the 2 superheroes Ironman and Spiderman ) make their plans without being able to see each other. The range on these walkie talkies is quite far, 1000+ feet. The only problem is that the kids have to remember what button to press to talk and what button to not press to listen ( or whatever ). It seems that they both have the need to talk at the same time all the time! Anyway, Nerf makes a great product and I know this toy will be around for a while. They'll probably use them in school( when they start ) to reek havoc on the playground!
