Berberine is a natural plant alkaloid that has been used for centuries in Asian medicine and is now beginning to gain recognition in Western medicine. I'm not going to make any medical claims, as this is a nutritional supplement. Here are some titles of recent papers on berberine, from treating insulin resistance and diabetes, to colitis, to memory problems: Hepatoprotection of Berberine Against Hydrogen Peroxide-induced Apoptosis by Upregulation of Sirtuin 1. The natural alkaloid berberine targets multiple pathways. Antidiabetic properties of berberine: from cellular pharmacology to clinical effects Suppressive effect of berberine on experimental dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis. Phellodendron amurense and Its Major Alkaloid Compound, Berberine Ameliorates Scopolamine-Induced Neuronal Impairment and Memory Dysfunction in Rats. Berberine improves insulin sensitivity by inhibiting fat store and adjusting adipokines profile in human preadipocytes and metabolic syndrome patients. There are more than 2500 more papers on Berberine listed on PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) take a look!

It's good
It works as well as the swanson brand but without the fillers and maybe even better because you can make your pills 500 mg instead of 400mg. I've had no ill effects using this powder, I was worried about it because it didn't have any reviews, but I took a chance on it and I am pleased with it.Update: 7-25-16 I purchased this again and was not pleased with the packaging. It was in a zippered bag that was way too large, it appeared as if the bag was half full. The first time I purchased it the bag was the right size. I also weighted the bag and it was less than 100 grams, it was 89.4 grams. I didn't weigh the first bag I ordered.
