Enola Holmes: The Case of the Missing Marquess

This is one of my bargain buys from Amazon at just £2. I had also seen it on Netflix but as an avid book lover I always have to read the book first before watching. That's my rule which I think a lot of readers can relate to. I am also a huge fan with anything to do with sherlock Holmes. Anything. With my first child I was sat watching it while having contractions all night!I knew this was right up my street! I didn't know he had a younger sister. So meet Enola! Just as clever as Sherlock but miles younger. She's off to find where her mother has gone but along the way she encounters danger and another run away. I loved it all. But I must say this could have been so much more. I felt they cut the ending very suddenly and gave all answers away just to finish it when it could have been so much longer and more for me.At just 170 ish pages it's a short read and I would have happily devoured another 170 pages of it too. But I loved it. I just wanted more, which is the sign of a good book I suppose. An easy read. An enjoyable read. Clever. A well deserved four stars from me.

Who would have thought! Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes with a free spirit mother, supported by them from a distance but not spoken about. Now she has gone missing, on her daughter Enola's fourteenth birthday. What now for the kid sister they have not seen for years? Mycroft insists on a strict boarding school to teach her attitudes befitting the inferior gender. On the day due to go there, Enola goes missing too.Prepare for a great read with much to applaud. Whilst true to the spirit of the original Holmes stories, the exploits of Enola prove gloriously inventive. She has inherited her mother's unconventional attitudes, not to mention her uncle's detective skills. Ahead is an intriguing kidnapping mystery. Readers will not doubt she will solve that soon enough (although coincidence has a major part to play). Adding much substance are pertinent observations about the plight of women at the time, not to mention the appalling poverty in the world's richest capital.A mixture of fun, intrigue and important things to say. Admittedly the ending seems rather rushed before Enola disappears again, but how splendid to have Sherlock genuinely astounded to discover his kid sister is a genuine force to reckon with!She is already back in sequels. Good news indeed.

An enjoyable, sharply-written story which forms the basis for the recent Netflix film 'Enola Holmes'.At just 160 pages it covers the setting up of Enola's character and her feistiness rather well and makes nice points about turning the garments and strictures of female oppression into tools of her nascent profession. The description of slum streets and Cockney dialogue also feel convincing, but there's no getting over the fact that 'The Case of the Missing Marquess' feels more like a prologue to subsequent stories than a novel in its own right.Still, there's enough here to make you feel the author's on to something with the character of Enola, and the epilogue setting her up for future adventures is nicely done.

I have not seen the film. The book is short (less than 200 pages), but a real page turner. I found Enola's predicament - being deserted by her mother - truly sad, and this sadness pervaded the book. Despite this - or maybe because of it - I found it had an original voice. The heroine was feisty and determined, and her adventures exciting. I shall probably read it again, as I rather rushed it the first time, because I wanted to know what happened next! The historical details were, as far as I could tell, accurate, and the odd Americanism not too off-putting. I will read the rest of the series, and see the film when I can access it.

After watching the Netflix show I thought it would be a great book for two different girls in my life. They are 11 and 9 respectfully and from what I heard they absolutely loved it! They loved the mystery and Enola herself, they thought she was a brilliant leader and they both can't wait to read more!
