I got one of these for Christmas there are no instructions and can not seem to work it, can anyone guide me please

I purchased the same item a few weeks ago,i have not used it yet i made a complaint about the lathe having no instructions of how to use it which i think is very dangerous but i have heard nothing since it must be up to Amazon to rectify this A.S.A.P, .

Can this be used on thin diameter 8mm x 100mm long balsa wood dowels to thinnen one end down gradually to about 3mm the other end?

I would say yes with a bit of skill and a very very sharp cutting tool. The biggest problem would be keeping the wood fastened to the motor end, since balsa wood is just too soft to keep fastened with the supplied shaft screw, it would work loose and fly off, and you apply pressure. You could make a larger diameter normal soft wood collar to hold your work piece and screw that collar to the motor shaft.
