I wish I could tell you to avoid but if you have a young child at school you can’t.
Ok my daughter hates Phonics, I hate phonics, it’s not the natural way to read, (fluency is built up by repetition, by being read to daily and gradual increase of skills based on recognition of word shape, think ladybird books, Peter and Jane etc.) but schools insist upon it and this is the only set the school recommended. Since phonics have been introduced there have been more problems identified than solved, they are unnecessarily complicated and children have to learn over 200 including the different sub sets and their name, (digraphs, phonemes, split digraphs and graphemes or spelling sequence by the age of 6 then they are tested on it. rigorously. My daughter is a fluent reader at home but at school she won’t read as the teacher told her that she needed to “sound” out every word. Beware of these demons as reading levels have plummeted, confidence in young readers is low and many have been diagnosed wrongly as having a difficulty if children aren’t reading in the prescribed way.

My granddaughter of 5 loves this book. It has helped with her phonics reading a spelling so much that she has gone up a group in class.
