Great narrative by a legend.

If you've watched PLANET EARTH or any of the countless other documentaries written by and/or featuring the reassuring and altogether charming voice of David Attenborough, then you are familiar with the warmth and grace he brings to discussions of the natural world. In some ways, he sounds like the official Narrator of Nature (NoN)--as if Gaia herself conjured the man from the mystic soil of Albion, endowed him with everlasting youth, and gave him the mission of protecting and advocating for her. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration--he's not THAT old, just a spry 92. And as this newly edited and incredibly delightful memoir proves, he is every bit as charming on the printed page as he is on the screen.For decades, Attenborough has played an outsized role in the very conception we citizens of earth have of our planet's fauna and flora. The very idea of sending camera crews and naturalists to the four corners of the world to witness the miracles of nature in situ originates with Attenborough and his earliest work with the BBC in the 1950s. Before then, as this wonderful book makes clear, TV nature shows consisted of a bunch of scientists in white lab coats, pinning poor animals down on stainless steel display tables and poking them to see what they would do. It seems like a no-brainer now to send cameras into the wild, but it took the convergence of technological developments (smaller cameras, mainly) and the humane sensibilities of the Zoo Quest team in mid-twentieth century for this revolutionary development to occur. And though the mission of the team was in fact to retrieve animals for the London Zoo, the legacy of those early forays is a commitment to leaving animals alone in their habitats so they can get along with their quotidian pursuits—and a sense that we human beings are privileged to be able to witness this at all. And more: that we humans have an obligation to fight the degradation of the planet and the miraculous variety of life it supports.So, this book: it's funny, self-deprecating, full of wonder, and downright thrilling in its descriptions of the team's (often bumbling) efforts to find, document, and in some cases capture the animals they were sent to retrieve. It is a terrific book, full of adventure. And if you have ever read and enjoyed James Herriot's lovely books about being a large-animal vet or the zoologist Gerald Durrell's hilarious accounts of his life, then you will be thrilled and have your soul lifted by ADVENTURES OF A YOUNG NATURALIST. Here's hoping that Gaia's gift to humankind, David Attenborough, carries on doing his thing forever and ever!

Die meisten kennen David Attenborough wohl eher als älteren Herren, der an allen Ecken und Enden der Welt vor der Kamera, begeistert vom Leben der jeweils heimischen Tiere und Pflanzen berichtend. Dieses Buch beinhaltet die Aufzeichnungen aus den ganz frühen Berufsjahren David Attenboroughs, als Naturdokumentationen dem Fernsehen noch fremd waren und er neben dem Filmen der Tiere diese auch noch für den Londoner Zoo sammelte und pflegte.Auch wenn das Sammeln von Wildtieren heute (glücklicherweise) nicht mehr gang und gäbe ist, wie David Attenborough auch in seiner aktuellen Einleitung zum Buch anmerkt, so war die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Londoner Zoo damals wohl die einzige Möglichkeit, überhaupt eine Expedition in die entlegensten Gegenden der Erde zum Filmen von Tieren, auf die Beine stellen zu können. Im Buch berichtet David Attenborough anhand seiner eigenen Aufzeichnungen von drei großen "Zoo Quest" Expeditionen nach Guyana, Indonesien, sowie Paraguay und Argentinien.Die Aufzeichnungen sind insgesamt so lebhaft, spontan und mit dem auch im Fernsehen sooft zutage tretenden Humor von David Attenborough durchsetzt, dass man selten daran denkt, dass all diese Ereignisse bereits 60 Jahre zurück liegen. Die Schreibweise und die Eigenschaft Attenboroughs, sich selbst und auch noch so widrige äußere Umstände nicht immer allzu ernst zu nehmen, machen das Buch sehr lesenswert. Dennoch täuschen sie nicht darüber hinweg, dass diese frühen Expeditionen ganz sicher keine entspannten Urlaubsreisen mit Safari im Dschungel waren. Viele Gegenden waren schlecht erschlossen, die Ausrüstung war noch nicht mit dem zu vergleichen, was heute zur Verfügung steht und vor allem musste alles selbst organisiert werden. Beim Lesen dieses Buches wird deutlich, mit wie viel Leidenschaft Attenborough und seine Mitstreiter, allen voran Kameramann Charles Lagus, zu Werke gingen um Bilder zu drehen von Orten die niemals zuvor so gefilmt worden waren.Lesern anderer Attenborough Bücher, allen voran "Life on Air", dürften einige Passagen vielleicht bekannt vorkommen. Dennoch kann ich das Buch allen empfehlen, die sich für Naturdokumentationen begeistern können. Es ist kurzweilig und angenehm zu lesen, dabei dennoch spannend und informativ und es zeigt sehr gut, wie mühsam und kleinteilig der Beginn dieser heutzutage so opulent wirkenden Filme war.Zusätzlich zum Text finden sich darüber hinaus an zwei Stellen im Buch seitenfüllende, teils farbige Fotographien, sowie regelmäßig kleine schwarz-weiß Bilder, die die entsprechenden Passagen illustrieren.Abschließend noch eine kurze Anmerkung zum Englischen. Wie ich finde ist das Buch auch ohne perfekte Kentnisse der Sprache gut zu lesen, sofern man sich für das Thema interessiert. Man findet zwar immer wieder den einen oder anderen unbekannten Fachbegriff, aber das große Ganze ist gut nachvollziehbar und so kann man es sich oftmals auch sparen, das Wörterbuch zur Hand zu nehmen. Wer sich noch etwas gedulden kann, der kann darüber hinaus auch die für Oktober angekündigte deutsche Fassung abwarten.Interessanterweise wurden vor Kurzem einige der Zoo Quest Filme, die ursprünglich in Farbe aufgezeichnet wurden, wiederentdeckt und sind nun erstmals in dieser Form erhältlich: Zoo Quest in Colour [UK Import].
