This set is very large but very light weight, so yes you could use for 8 or 9 year old children, but my 9 year old grand daughter wouldn't wear this set because it is very unattractive

My hands are big, how do thebraclets fasten? Are thesesmall?

These dont fasten. The metal is soft so you kind of bend the rings until your hand gets in and squeeze the metal down until it fits well. They're pretty and as long as you take care of them they wont break. I will admit however the clasp on the necklace broke the first time i was wearing it so all I've used is the bracelets and earrings.
