Metcal PS-900 Production Soldering Complete System, 100/240V

This thing is amazing. I didn't need to spend this much on a soldering iron but I feel its worth it. It heats up instantly, and no need to mess with temp. Just turn it on and go. Mine came with a tip SFV-CH15A

I'm an electronic hobbyist and do a lot of soldering. Before my retirement I worked for a large semiconductor manufacturing company that used Metcal 5210s and fell in love with them. I've searched Ebay for a good used one, but they are also very expensive.This PS-900 fits the bill for my purposes. Soldering tips are somewhat pricey but will last forever if properly cared for. The unit is ready in 15 seconds, no waiting for the iron to get hot. Soldering tips can be changed without cooling using the provided "hot pad".Now anyone can have a Metcal for less than $300.00 instead of $600.00.Purchased in Feb. 2022 and have had no issues since.

This unit rocks. Fast, fast, fast with a multitude of tips available. It has even helped desolder joints I would never have attempted before.I wish I would have had one years back.

Used at our shop sporadically for 14 months (maybe 5-10 hours a week on average). Died 2 months outside of 12-month warranty (power supply turns on but iron does not heat up). Have not torn it down to find the root cause. Won't be buying this model again.Anecdotally, performance seemed great at the beginning, but slowly got worse over time, despite several changes of tips.

I tried some basic solder wire off of Amazon, which didnt melt at all. Then I got some high end rework wire (tried lead and leadless) and am still unable to get it to melt.
