A million steps up from trying to cheap it out with a towel.
If you use a hand held heat press and are on the fence about whether the cost of another piece of equipment is worth it...this one absolutely is! I have a pretty low end, mish-mashed hobby setup, and adding a mat like this (on a very rigid surface) really improved my finished product.
