Good features and excellent value for the money, depending on your application
I am an avid camper and backpacker, and have owned several headlamps over the years. These range from high quality, full featured (but expensive) headlamps intended for lengthy trips in the backcountry in all types of weather, to inexpensive kinds meant for weekend car camping or to use around the house. To me, the Vont Spark headlamp falls somewhere between the two. The low cost for two Vont headlamps in an excellent value for the money, as long as you know its limitations. What sets the Vont headlamp apart from other inexpensive headlamps I've owned are the features. In terms of features and comfort, it resembles some of the better known brands such as Petzl and Black Diamond -- lightweight, comfortable, multiple brightness and mode settings, adjustable tilt, and water-resistance.What keeps it from rivaling some higher end headlamps are primarily:1) Battery life (as printed on the product's packaging). This is the biggest factor. The Spark is rated at 3 hours on high beam and 8 hours on low beam, vs. my Black Diamond Spot headlamp, which is rated at a lengthy 50 hours on high beam (200 lumens, same as the Spark) and a whopping 200 hours on low beam (keep in mind the brightness will diminish over that amount of time). The claimed 90 hours of battery life for the Spark most likely pertains to the red beam, but I'm not sure.2) Water resistance. While I haven't tested it myself, the Spark's IPX5 rating means it should be able to withstand "water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm (0.25 in)) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects." Compare that to my Black Diamond, which has an IPX8 rating, able to withstand immersion in water for over 30 minutes. The Spark will probably be fine when used during the rain, but don't drop it in the lake. :-)With those limitations noted, I still think the Vont Spark is a great value for the money. At an effective cost of 5 bucks a headlamp, it is one-sixth the cost of my Black Diamond, with many of the same features, and Vont backs it up with a lifetime warranty. I've been using the Spark for several months now around the house, and have been pleased with it. I also would not hesitate to bring this headlamp (and some extra batteries) on a camping trip up to 3 days or so, where the battery life would most likely be sufficient. When I head out to the backcountry for a longer trip? I'm reaching for one of my higher end headlamps, where battery life is a very important factor (still bringing those extra batteries though!).
