When this book was originally printed in 1853, all of the authors writing books about side saddle riding were men. Few women were writing at all, let alone writing about a subject like riding horses. Most women had to sit a horse at one time or another, or riding in a carriage was the only other alternative. - that or staying home. Alice M Hayes was a world traveler with her husband, and rode sidesaddle wherever she went, Egypt, India, everywhere. While there have been several reprintings and some edits, it is most gratifying to see that it is now avail able in a Kindle edition. There are chapters on everything associated with Side Saddle Riding and in addition, there is much about medicine, saddle care home made products, dressing safely, the qualities of the horse to choose for side saddle riding, the finer points of mounting and dismounting and so much more. I read an original edition many years ago, that belonged to my mentor, who was the first woman to compete riding side saddle against astride riders in the Olympics back in the 1960's. I kept looking for a copy over the years, never finding one I could afford until this last year I found a Kindle edition. I was so excited, i had to call my daughter to tell her I had finally found it... Since then, i have read through it twice. There is so much information contained in this book that is still relevant today. I suggest you add it to your library if you are trying to ride side saddle. There is nothing like reading how a true horseman/woman, use to ride and manage their horses. I gained a lot of knowledge on the topic, and I found it invaluable when looking into whether my little mare would have been able to cope with the added weight of the side-saddle plus me!! I would definitely recommend this book, to anyone wanting to learn about the subject.
