We took ours to a Ford Merc dealer and had them make the keys from the original and they work. Our Mercury Mountaineer is 2008. Hope this helps.

On my 03 Town car the fobs worked. The keys would not program, they were junk. For the key look for a Stratech programmable key. It was like $30. Programmed easily and still works a couple years later.
