Making Woodblock Prints

Excellent book, snail-paces shipping
This is an excellent book for those starting out with woodblock printing. Together with Laura Boswell's book "Making Japanese Woodblock Prints", this pair forms a solid foundation of equipment, preparation, and technique. My rating is for the book. You may want to select a different vendor (see below)The shipping from the vendor, however, leaves a bit to be desired. The books arrived in perfect condition, packed in a padded envelope. However, I purchased the books on June 30 and they arrived on July 23. Tracking indicated the books shipped on July 2, but the next tracking information begins July 10, apparently taking days to travel 10 hrs from the origin, then another 6 days to travel an hour's drive to the next stop. The original arrival estimate was July 13 - 19, if I remember correctly. On July 19, the books were delayed in Utah for 2 days before resuming their journey, taking 3 days to make the 5 hour trip. Looking at the reviews, shipping time seems to be the biggest issue with this vendor.

Great resource and reading
Great resource and reading! Well put together all around with information very accessible and great images with text to help describe processes etc. Love this and am using it for our text in Relief Printmaking this year. Thank you Merlyn Chesterton! Another jewel for us printmakers, teachers, collectors, and everyone else.

Excellent Introduction to Woodblock Printmaking
Very well written, detailed information, lots of photos, an excellent resource. My only complaint is they spent a bit more time and pages on obscure Chinese printing techniques that seem beyond the scope and probably desire of people just learning the craft.

Very Thorough Explanation of Woodblock Prints
Yet another relief printmaking book authored by a Brit, but focusing peripherally on Chinese printmakers. Ms. Chesterton writes very simply and uses good illustrations and photographs to accompany her text. Very good section on sharpening your knives.

Good,comprehensive intro book
I really like the extensive use of visuals and how nothing is assumed. You are not left with doubt about what is being described.

Wonderful book!
Great book for beginners and professional printmakers. The author has a thorough knowledge of the medium. And I feel it's one book I'll read again. Enjoyed it thoroughly! Especially the art!

Perhaps you could turn your favourite chopping board into a woodblock
This is a dangerous book to read, it will make you want to pick up something sharp and carve into any bit of wood you see lying about....your table could be in danger! Perhaps you could turn your favourite chopping board into a woodblock? Completely inspiring and full of great explanations, no higher praise can be given for a 'how to' book.

A brilliant book!
I, and I guess a lot of other people, have been waiting for a book like this for years, so it is really great to have it at last. The authors are very generous with their own skills and expertise and sharing it with the readers, and it will be on my workbench as I make my own woodcuts. The step by step guidance is both detailed and clear, but more than that, the book and the illustrations are a huge source of inspiration and enthusiasm for the art of woodcut. I particularly love the examples from a Chinese primary school.

Get to see how a Print is Made
If you are into or just enjoy seeing how woodblock prints are made, this is the book for you. The authors are both practicing artists and more importantly it is written from an English/European perspective, re suppliers, etc. There is a lot of information and illustrations in a small package, you get to see how a print is made. Well worth the money

Brilliant book. An absolute delight to read, illustrated throughout with beautiful and unusual prints (both from the authors and also from a wide range of other sources). It's a real education, with everything you could ever need to know about woodblock printing and providing real inspiration to get going. And to top it all... Incredible value. Totally recommend.
