I love it… so far
I think Bishop Barron did an awesome job compiling the gospels in this easy to read and understand study Bible I love the additional insights from Saint Thomas Aquinus and from GK Chesterton. I do feel like these have a very Western European focus when it comes to the art pieces and I do wish that they’d also include writings from the female Doctors of the Church as well just for broader perspective… but I get that’s asking a lot from a book that is already doing more than any other study book on the Gospels I’ve ever read.

A Visceral Experience
I was raised Christian, but spent the past twenty years astray from it. I’ve now returned, and my focus has been on the gospels. While my first reading lifted my spirit, I felt a bit disoriented from the text—I wanted more context, especially visual context. I agree with another reviewer that the translation used in these gospels is not the best (I’m fond of ESV and of David Bentley Hart’s rambunctious account), but it’s definitely legible, and by far the easiest to swallow. In any case, the commentaries and art pieces are what make these gospels shine. It’s like a full-body experience reading them. I do wish some of the Catholic touches were a little more discreet, so as not to alienate people who are turned off by a particular theological bend. But if one can separate the wheat from the chaff, this book has a lot to offer. It’s lovely.

Reading with the church
The extensive and excellent commentary is the reason to read this Bible. From church fathers and modern writers, the incites from two thousand years aid in one's understanding of the word. Robert Barron provides much of the commentary, but it is clearly grounded in long conversation that has explored the meaning of the Gospels. Commentary is not on the same level as the text of the Bible itself. I doubt anyone will agree with every interpretation found here. As a saying from another discipline goes, between two lawyers there are three interpretations. But I think most will find their reading of the Gospels enriched by the well chosen commentary.
