Meeting God in Paul: Reflections for the Season of Lent

A Book for the People in the Pews
So much of the New Testament was written by St. Paul (or purported to be written by him). As a longtime lay reader in my church, I have one thing to say about Paul: He needed a good editor. Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury and the author of this book, "Meeting God in Paul: Reflections for the Season of Lent," does not disagree with that! Still, in Paul's defense he had no idea he was writing the Bible. In his mind, he was merely writing letters to the new Christian communities to instruct, scold and bolster them in their faith and life. Paul was a man of deep emotions, says Williams, and that is apparent in his writings. Paul was passionate in his epistles because he was helping to form what he considered to be a new world order--and, interestingly, not a new religion. As Williams says, this was a whole new way to belong with God and one another, and it was diametrically opposed to the current way of life. St. Paul was a radical! Most of all, this book is about the humanity of St. Paul. And Williams has penned a most accessible book. He may have had the highest position in the worldwide Anglican communion, but he has written a book for the people in the pews.

Meeting Paul as a guide
This book reminded me of the power that resides in the letters of Paul. Masterly writing by Rowan Williams and had the additional benefit of drawing me back to Tom Wright's magnificent book also on Paul. A really good read
